So I picked up tickets back in July for a show System and the Mars Volta. Couldnt get floor but I wasnt in the nose bleeds either.

Me and my buddy were going so he gives me a call today and we decide to hang out and do some pre concert drinking. We head down to the Red Cactus which basically is a porch that serves beer and are chatting it up with the people when we run into some people that are also going.

The lucky fucks have box seats to the show. We chat it up and have a good time with them and decide to head off.

At the concert we run into them again and after some chatting we are given a ticket each to the "Box" We were right on the stage, the booze was on the house
, it was fully catered, we had our own servants... well not our own servants but we did have a person whose job was do make our life easier. Not only that but everyone in the "Box" was given tickets to the sold out October~fest deal for a special after concert party.

Needless to say Mars Volta was amazing and System was almost as good.

I'm no particular fan of System of a Down either, to be honest, but The Mars Volta? Damn I'm envious. I only had one chance to catch one of their concerts but it happened to fall the night before one of my finals.

Glad to hear that they were as good as I'd have hoped they'd be

Oh and what did they play? Did they do any kind of weird jamming? Or did they do that thing where they don't really play much at all for like 5 whole minutes and call it a bridge?

Details!

Dude, System of a Down is one of my favorite bands. Chop Suey is my all time favorite song thus far. Not only did you go to a kickass band's concert, but you got to sit in box seats. Fuck yeah. Kudos to you. Kudos.

SOAD's first album was great. Their second album was slightly less great, but still decent. Their newest album sucks syphallitic donkey **********

However, that would still be a fun concert to see.

I saw them a few years back on The Pledge of Allegiance tour. With System and Slipknot co-headlining also Rammstein was there.

Suffice to say it was a great show. It was general admission so I was right up front the whole time.

There weren't any box seats as fas as I know, so drinks and the jolly green stuff were on me.

At the end of the System set, there was a bit of a scrum as the drummer threw his sticks out (not good with band member names.

About 10 people jumped at it, and being 6'5 with a bit of weight, I jumped up, and pulled all my weight to the floor and got the stick.

It was a wonderful evening and a fantastic concert.

I can't wait to see NIN mid october, also Sage Francis the next night. In my opinion, two of the great artists.

I just wish I could have gotten the stick signed .

Their new album really has grown on me. Its all I had with me while I made a 32 hour bus ride out to Vancouver (and the 36hour ride back).

After the 10th time listening to it, perhaps around Golden BC I was completely in love with it.

System was good and played a good mix of new and old. They didnt start up until 10:20pm because their flight into town was late. However we were warned and just sat around and watched the complimentary satellite TV in the room and drank.

The first act was "Hella" which is probably the worst live act I have ever been subjected to. There was a 30 minute intermission then the Mars Volta came out and played an extended set to kill time while Systems flight landed. All I can say is WOW, Mars Volta is probably one of the most amazing live bands ive had the privilege to hear. Plus the lead singer can bust a move, rare to see guys that can dance that well.

System came out and a real tight set but it could barely be 90min tops. They are real showmen and interact with the crowd and one of the better metal performances i have seen but I think the Volta outdid them and especially after the splendour that was Pearl Jam it just didnt shine as well as it could have.

Agreed. They can't even hold a candle to the energy that At The Drive In put out though.

Hey Bhodi, sounds like you had a great time at the show. Any time free alcohol is involved it has to be a good time! You lucked out large!

I was right up next to the stage barrier for the Blue Rodeo concert last Saturday, but I had to pay for beer. Smiley: glare

I used my digital cam to tape one of the songs if you are interested I can link. (My own personal bootleg woohoo!)

I heard Mars Volta for the first time Sunday when we were playing poker. Not bad, if you like that sort of thing.

I was kind of thrown off of Mars Volta by the album at first but it grows on you. However live is so amazing. They played Widow and then went into L'via L'viaquez. Seeing them live blew the album out of the water. Those boys can play.

Free booze and food didnt hurt either.

Eldie, give me a PM with link or emails or whatever, my GF loves them so I would be interested in the bootleg, I'll trade you the Pearl Jam show from earlier in the month :P

True.

It's one of my favourite songs off the new album. I tend to sign often too, had a fair few odd looks from singing that chorus.

I love concerts. I was a concertaholic in my teen years. That is so kick *** that you got those seats. You must be one helluva fan to travel the equivalent of three days to see that show. Personally, I don't like either band, but I have the utmost respect for your passion.

I come from the punk/ska circuit of the mid to late 90's. Bands like Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Dieselboy, Goldfinger etc. etc. These shows were energized! All the fans were about 20 feet from the band. At the end of their sets, the band members would come hang out in the crowd to watch the other bands. It was a real community, albeit not a very lucrative business opportunity for said band members. Now a days, most teenagers wouldn't know good music if it kicked them square in the cojones. They all dress the same and you really can't distiguish the male and female versions. I guess that might be due to the fact that the boys are hijacking clothes from their sisters' closets. Meh. 3 blocks with all that alcohol takes some courage too! That you actually knew what your house looked like or that you even knew what you looked like is a true testament to your love fo the music. I stand by my prior statement.

Dave, my friends and I sing those lyrics all the time, don't worry 'bout it.

Unless you're 50 and doing that...then, you might have a problem. Teenagers get away with a lot cause of all the "feelings" and "emotions" we have cascading through our bodies. God damn hormones(sp)?.

You can't sing about sodomy and blame it on hormones.

Or can you?

I saw System Of A Sown at the Download Festival in June, and they were crap. No interaction, really boring, ran through the motions, upstaged by Bowling 4 Soup the previous day and Slipknot the previous set. Luckily the crowd was hot for it. Shame, I like System as a band.

Oh, and SomethingAwful > you.

I can't help but agree. I live in the Seattle area and I attend a lot of shows, about 2 a month on average and I just went to the System show on wednesday. I've seen local bands with more stage presence.

I will give them credit that they play a lot of songs (they played every one I wanted to hear) and they do play their music well live. But that comes at the cost of no crowd interaction, unelss it has something to do with putting down Bush, which while that's their opinion and it's their show so fine, but that doesn't really get me in the mood for a rock show. I know it's their platform and blah blah blah, but I go to shows to have a good time, not to reflect on politics or relgion while im in the middle of the pit with a few hundred other sweaty ass people.

I'm not a huge System fan, but I do dig a lot of their songs. But along with zero stage prescene, they dont' even have a decent show. They had some lights in the background in Seattle, nothing speacial.

I saw Mastodon in a small club a few months ago, and they totally blew me away with their stage presence, it was so intense. They didn't have much of a "show" either, but the pure intensity of it all more than made up for it. I rather see that than go to another System show.
