There is a prison about 20 minutes from here. The claim to fame is launching a program called "Scared Straight".

The program is designed to scare potential criminals, (juveniles) out of thier current path of self destruction, and anti social behavior. This is achieved by parading hardened criminals in front of them, and basically scaring the shit out of them.

The plan backfired when a couple gang members beat the he
ll out of the inmates. Smiley: lol

WOODBRIDGE — They call the program at East Jersey State Prison "Scared Straight."

But yesterday the group lesson that attempts to shock young offenders into staying out of prison backfired when three "guests" listening to the hardened inmates attacked two of them, badly beating one, authorities said.

Its a fucked up world when the ******* out of prison are worse than the ******* in. Smiley: oyvey

Not really, if you ask me.

Prison breaks people down more than a lot of people would believe. Plus, the people who are in there were dumb enough to get caught and convicted in the first place.

"Scared Straight" program has been around for a very long time. I remember a movie about in the 80's. Not sure if its done much good. Maybe in some cases, but I think that is because maybe that person really wanted to change.

That's really the bottom line. The desire to change the path you are currently on.

Pretty stupid considering the inmates can't actually DO anything to them. Of course the visitors beat the hell outta them.

I say put the little fuckers IN jail for a few days. Let em get friendly with a few inmates. Put them in opposing gangs cells. Let em get stabbed/rapped/molested. Thats scared fucking stright.

Yeah, cause there's no liability attached to that course of action AT ALL.

Which does seem ironic, since the one who confronted the inmate and all who attacked them are by their own actions and admissions headed to prison anyway. But there you go.

The problem, or part of the problem, is that once people have taken the step of joining a gang, and the further steps required to gain acceptance into the ranks of that gang, there is no way they're going to back down just because of a little tough talk from a prisoner who a year or two ago was just another rival gang member. Identify those guys when they're 10 or 12, not 15 or 17, and you might have a chance to scare them... well, onto a different path at least, if not entirely straight.

I remember we had our 'D.A.R.E' program in middle school.. where a cop comes in and talks about the horrors of drug use...

He'd tell us stories of how drug can "make you feel like you're on top of the world" and how this one woman (for example) smoked flakes and saw monsters coming out of her TV set.. and other such tales...

From waht I see... that program if anything amplified interest in drugs. Kid we're like "WOW they make you see monsters!? COOOL!!"

Yeah, we did the same. I was SO disappointed when I tried pot for the first time. No hallucinations, no freakouts, what a bore.

Though the prison visit did not work in this case, there are high profile cases where seeing the results of your current actions can scare people the right way.

Oh god, I cannot remember her name, but she was an actress who was on Eastenders (a soap drama in the UK). She snorted cocaine. Her abuse was that bad, that the central bridge of her nose had dissolved under the constant abuse. A newspaper cameraman had taken a photo of her and instead of a nice nose (as she once had), was a gaping single hole, the centre peice of skin that makes the nostrils was simply gone. It was horrible. The picture went out the next day, it was on TV, in all the papers, everywhere.

To this day, I cannot think of a better way to scare young children away from snorting cocaine. Who wishes to have an ugly cave like nose?
