Governator to veto gay marriage billFollow

Why can't gay people just make their own religion? Wouldn't that work?

And for that matter, I can just say "It's too bad two guys or two girls can't be married under the law because, well, they can't"

The whole point is that the law preventing them from being married is wrong.

If you wish to discuss changing the age of consent law, that's a separate issue.

I'm all for the gay marriage I just brought up the question of the whole family thing just to change the angle of the conversation.

Moving along.

Govt promotes marriage and the nuclear family. It doesnt mandate it. They give benefits because on the whole its more than likely going to lead to family.

With gay marriage the raising of a child is the exception.

Dont mistake rights and benefits. They should have all the same rights as married couples but should they be given the same benefits such as tax breaks that are meant to support the nuclear family. That is what Im going for,

Because it's supposed to spread like wildfire? Personally, I support him on this. The state should never dictate what constitutes a religious tradition such as marriage. For that matter, should it be okay to let kids get drunk because they can have wine at Communion? Or, would you strict interpretationists say that the government should step in and illegalize Communion based on the same reasoning?

marriage is not a religious constitution, nor was it founded that way, it is a commitment between two people. If you consider a religious constitution then it should play no role in politics and the government would have no say over it. Therefore, since the government has a say over it, all religious implications are removed and these people can get back to living their lives the way they want to without the redneck freaks gasping in horror.

Somehow I got the impression of the part in Huckleberry Finn where the con men put on the farce. Each nite a different crowd falls for it but are so embarrassed that they con the next crowd into going.

Kinda like that but take out the shakespeare and replace it with sodomy.

Statistics can also be used to show that blacks may be more likely to get in a car accident, or hispanics have a lower life expectancy. But charging them different insurance rates is illegal.

Edit: A better solution would be to provide some amount of benefits for all married couples. Then provide a whole bunch of extra benefits only for couples that actually do raise a family, not just those more likely to.

Oh wait, don't we already have that?

If we legalize gay marriage, everyone will be come gay and rush to get married (in churches, oh the horror!), all women will get pregnant just to have abortions, people will be calling for marriages to children, animals and plants, and no matter who you are, where you live or how much you make, you will expect the government to take care of your every need and whim.

That's pretty much the jist of these threads, right?

There they have to go and ruin it for everyone by asking for equal treatment. We go and let them have their parades and gay bars and all that other stuff and then they have the gumption to go and ask for more!!!

Actually, in ancient times, it was more of a commitment between two tribes.

I ponder whether THIS is why insest has always really been frowned upon... where is the gain in marrying a person from your own tribe?

It was all about dowery and tribal diplomacy.

Check out this list of the "Degrees of Marriage" instated by the ancient Irish.

Brehon Law wrote:

• A first degree union takes place between partners of equal rank and property.

• A second degree union in which a woman has less property than the man and is supported by him.

• A third degree union in which a man has less property than the woman and has to agree to management of the woman's cattle and fields.

• A fourth degree union is the marriage of the loved one in which no property rights changed hands, though children's rights are safeguarded.

• A fifth degree union is the mutual consent of the man and woman to share their bodies, but live under separate roofs.

• A sixth degree union in which a defeated enemy's wife is abducted. This marriage is valid only as long as the man can keep the woman with him.

• A seventh degree union is called a soldier's marriage and is a temporary and primary sexual union (a one night stand).

• An eighth degree union occurs when a man seduces a woman through lying, deception or taking advantage of her intoxication (equivalent to the modern definition of "date rape").

• A ninth degree union is a union by rape (forcible rape).

• A tenth degree union occurs between feeble-minded or insane people.

This is all Pre-Christian and lasted until the Normal Conquest in of the Island.

Note that ANY form of bumping uglies at all was concidered marriage.

Also note that any for of "God" doesn't enter into anything. All buisness.
And this in a culture that believed that "Gods" walked among them..

It was ALL about the Benjahmins.

Western Civ only discussed the Norman Invasion of 1066, this is the first I'd ever heard they went after Ireland a century later. Nifty.

I hear you..

Celts are studied in school even less than Africans.
The Anglo/Norman opression even still effects us from America..

come to think of it, the Normans conquered many places.. France(Normandy?), Italy, Russia, Africa.... They got around.. Now we have alot of red-heads to show for it..

I hope Western Civ wasn't your major.
