Tired of throwing away good money after bad on my elderly '93 Nissan Altima, I have decided it's time to get some new wheels. Now, my first choice was the Fiat Multipa, just in case I ever needed to drive to the bottom of the ocean or something but I don't think they even sell those in the U.S.

Ok, so I just wanted to link that God awful car.

But seriously, I need a new ride. Something economical, good milage, reliable, etc. No trucks, SUVs, minivans or the like. Probably a four-door for the kiddo. Not that I'm going to let you knuckle-heads pick out my car for me, but I'm open to suggestions. I just had the revelation about my car last night so my looking into this is minimal thus far.

I'd say the RX-8

Neat engine.
Decent Milleage (18/25) though nothing to write home about.
Looks fun to drive.
Four dours, no B pillar, exceptionaly rigid chassis.

Its got lots of awards.

Probably not what you want, but still wanted to link to it, as I can't wait to testdrive one.

I've been rather happy with the Saturns I've had and driven; I'm on my second Saturn in a row as well as my mom - got her into Saturns, which isn't much of a stretch since her previous was a Mazda 626.

What's your budget?

I recommend either buying a consumer digest for cars at the bookstore or going online to:

http://www.consumerreports.org/main/home.jsp

You have to pay a subscription but it's worth it $26.00 for a year or $4.95 a month. It pretty much breaks down everything for you. You can look at multiple cars and see what they say about every one.

Good Luck in your search

Incidentally, I'm well aware there's a plethora of automotive sites and searches on ye olde web. I was asking you chunks what your opinions were on ones you may own/have owned.

Edit: That wasn't directly levelled at Spirish, just a pre-emptive move on my part

Well I have nothing but good to say so far with my recent purchase of the Toyota Matrix. It's a 4 door hatchback, with decent leg room and room for storage. If you keep your little one in the back seat, the front passenger seat will fold down and it has a tray that can be used for people in the back. Mine cost $18k but you can get them cheaper. Gets 34/36 per gallon on the highway.

oh. I thought you wanted an unbiased opinion..silly me ;)

I bought my car used at CarMax. Probably not kiddo friendly, but it looks cool and runs good. It only had 9k on it when I bought it. A Dodge Stratus R/T. It's a sporty version of the four door Stratus. It's gets decent gas mileage. I didn't want a 4 cyl. they just don't have much pickup and go IMHO. This one has a V6. But like I said probably not very kid friendly, it's only two doors but it's pretty roomy in the back.

Honda's and Toyota's have gotten pretty expensive brand new and it's hard to find one with low mileage that's used.

Anyway, good luck again.

Oh, I'll look into stuff via the usual channels. But sometimes a few biased opinions help steer your course Smiley: wink2

I've heard that regarding the Civics that, as a downside to their reliability, they maintain value well so finding a recent used one for a significant fraction off the new price isn't likely.

Don't go GM

I'll list a few of my 2003 Sunfire's problems...

Tail-lamp wiring..
Head-lamp wiring..
Washer fluid Pump
Trunk button,
Door's falling apart..

and Last night , It almost cost me my life,, wehn a guy pulled RIGHT out in front of me and I found that my HORN Stopped Working... so to avoid a collision I had to screech over the median strip in ending up on the other side of the road facing the wrong way... The guy drove away with me having no way to express my outrage.... Then a Cop pulls up and looks at me like I'm drunk and tests me...

DON'T get a GM car.

I had a sunbird. It got to the point where you couldn't turn it off without pulling out a few fuses.

I now have an oldsmobile cutlass supreme. Its sturdy, and rugged... despite being 10 years old.

From my American built experience, I would suggest getting somthing foreign, for now.

When I bought my car, I had gone to the website for that particular CarMax chose several and went and researched them.

Anyway, I did test drive a Toyota Corolla. It had like 500 miles on it at 18k. I realy didn't care for the way it drove it didn't have any balls. When you commute 75 miles round trip everyday in heavy Dallas traffic, you need a car that hauls *** when you need to. There are some crazy As* drivers here and the term "Defensive Driving" takes on a whole new meaning. That's pretty much why I went with the V6 I get about 29 miles to the gallon.

We're pretty happy with our Saturn Ion. 4 Door, the baby fits nicely in the back seat, no problems so far in the first year we've owned it (the only recall was for a headlight bulb fitting and they replaced it in 20 minutes). We splurged and got a sunroof, so I think it came out to being somewhere around 17k. We leased, far easier to pay the taxes on that then if we had bought it.

In my dreams, I'll set it on fire and roll it into a ditch. In reality, I'll probably take whatever the dealer is willing to give me for it.

In the past couple months, I had to throw $500 into it to get it to pass emissions and another $400 for a fuel injector, oil pressure sensor and patch up the leaks that cost it two quarts of oil a week. There's an issue with the timing chain that'd require removing most of the engine to get at as well and the mechanic said he'd drive the car into the ground before he paid eight hours labor to fix the chain. The car's latest trick is to just up and die about once every 48 hours. I've been able to coast onto a shoulder and restart it each time but that's not a trait you look for in a vehicle. Transmission has a problem too if you use the overdrive but, if you don't, you're looking at 4000 RPM to maintain 65mph. Rust on the fenders, electric in the doors is shot (the window lock has to be on or the windows will go up and down on their own whim) and the upholstry's seen better days between the kid and my days of working outside in the mud. Oh, and to open the fuel door, you have to go into the trunk and wiggle your fingers between the fender and the trunk liner for the hitch to pop the door.

I'm tellin' ya... fire and a ditch.

I got 258,000 miles on my '96 Ranger 4.0L V6 and had to put very little work into it.

But if you are looking for a car rather than a truck, I did very well with my '03 Maxima until I traded it in for a new truck. Great gas mileage, decent power and a very smooth ride. Radio controls on the steering wheel are sweet bonus too.

I would recommend the Honda Civic 4 door. If you look around you should be able to find a used one in your price range. As for their reliability, I have a 91 Civic with 244k miles, and it's still running strong. Burns a little oil, but what do you expect out of a car with over 200k on it?

In good concience I could not recommend anything but a nice fuel efficient motorcycle. However, since you are looking for a 4 door car, here is one of the better bets:

Toyota Prius

I have had a lot of luck with Toyotas, and the depreciation over 3-5 years is so low that your annual cost per year is lower than purchasing any American brand vehicle. So essentially, if you do the math you lose nothing on your investment if you want to stay in a newer car. The additional bonus, if you are seriously thinking about keeping the vehicle longer than that is that this car is only about $21K ish. If you are looking in the teens for price, consider the fuel savings of a hybrid like this. It could potentially save you thousands a year at the pump, and you end up with a better car in the end.

That's my Smiley: twocents, and no, I do not sell cars.

I've heard many folks have great luck with Toyotas and Nissans.

Personally I've owned a '93 Chevy Cavalier that I got rid of at 280k miles...a 2000 Ford Ranger, which I got rid of because it was too expensive for my long drive.

Currently I drive a 2000 Grand AM, which has not been without it's minor problems, but for the most part does me fine. I have about 108k miles on it, and still manage to get 29.8725 mpg.

The plus side is that I managed to pick it up for under $4k. If you are willing to spend in the teens, I would imagaine that you could pick up a nice ride probably 2003 or newer. Check the Nissans (Altima or Maxima), I've heard good things.

Oddly enough, one of my co-workers just picked up a 2005 Nissan Altima last week. He did a lot of looking around before he got it, and he said it rides like a dream for the price.
