By way of contrast, the tsunami victims in the Far East were orderly, disciplined, and industrious in taking care of their community, while the citizenry of Nawlines rapes, riots, burns, and attacks their rescuers.

What has been made abundantly clear is that it is a large segment of American society who are the barbarians. Under that thin veneer of civilization lies a savage who is just waiting eagerly for an opportunity to come out and live as lawlessly as any resident in Sadr City, Baghdad.

And it's all there in living color for the world to witness as the cameras roll tape. How embarrassing.

Maybe they're just lashing out at an oppressive regime like the ones in Baghdad were Smiley: wink2

I had to change the channel from CNN last night. They were interviewing 2 folks who they had evacuated about the conditions in the shelters. The woman who was talking said some really stupid things. When asked if they were getting plenty of food and water she said something like "..we haven't had a hot meal and days, just cold food.." and "water? oh yeah we gots plenty of water"

No shit you haven't had a hot meal you numb fuck. If there was electricity to cook with there wouldn't be quite the situation down there that there is. Sorry the Ritz didn't roll out the red carpet for you.

Maybe next time we'll have some chicken and mashed potatoes to serve up with our natural disaster.

There were actually countless stories of "disaster relief" crews raping the people they were saving.

Scroll down to the Threat of Sexual Violence

While the total chaos that is New Orleans did not occur with the Tsunami, you also have to remember that about 1/20th of the population was left alive, so the only chaos came from the people who were sent in to rescue people.

Totally different situation.

They don't make for a good news story now do they?

That'd be the bulk of the ~60k people (as of the other day anyway) who we've been hearing about 24/7. I'm glad they're not looting, rioting or whatever but they're not lacking for news coverage (thankfully).

State of nature; state of war. The stuff going down is a stinging reminder that so much of what constitues human dignity and nobility hinges upon such a fragile thing as organized society.

But its all good. In today's NY Times the secretary of homeland security said that things were alright and that violence was only occasional. But wait. In the preceeding column, the NY Times reported basically what Totem said. Plus, the convention center, which had been a secondary impromptu shelter along the with the Dome, had been taken over by armed "thugs", who had sucessfully repeled a sizeable police force that tried to retake the facility.

******* mind-blowing.

Everything was fine until someone noticed the words "Soylent Green" on the sides of a relief crate.

On a more serious note, it's amazing what the desperation of this event is causing people to do. I heard a report on NPR this morning from rescuers who said that it's just not safe to go out at night. Not because of the water or unseen objects in the water, but because of looters with guns running around.

A few words of inspiration and courage from the mayor of N.O.:

Quote:
Now you got some knuckleheads out there, and they are taking advantage of this lawless -- this situation where, you know, we can't really control it, and they're doing some awful, awful things. But that's a small majority of the people. Most people are looking to try and survive.

And one of the things people -- nobody's talked about this. Drugs flowed in and out of New Orleans and the surrounding metropolitan area so freely it was scary to me, and that's why we were having the escalation in murders. People don't want to talk about this, but I'm going to talk about it.

You have drug addicts that are now walking around this city looking for a fix, and that's the reason why they were breaking in hospitals and drugstores. They're looking for something to take the edge off of their jones, if you will.

And right now, they don't have anything to take the edge off. And they've probably found guns. So what you're seeing is drug-starving crazy addicts, drug addicts, that are wrecking havoc. And we don't have the manpower to adequately deal with it. We can only target certain sections of the city and form a perimeter around them and hope to God that we're not overrun.

Something that isn't really brought up much is the fact that New Orleans already had the highest crime rate of any city in the US.

As per SammyX's quote of the mayor of Nawlines, "But that's a small majority of the people."

Small majority? As in 51% of the populace?*

*[sm]Yes, yes, I know what he meant. It's along the same lines as, "He axed me to help him loot dis Walmarts," or as Iron Mike said, "I'm impregnable!" It's a black thing, y'all. You white breads wouldn't unnerstan'.

------------------------------------------------------

this is because the people in asian countries have been brow beat for all their lives that sitting some where and dieing of starvation is......normal.....and acceptable.

people here EXPECT a higher standard of living. good? bad? either way it is AMERICAN.

it was AMERICANS who stood up and tossed the brits out because they REFUSED to sit quietly and ACCEPT what the people in power felt they deserved.

most of the people in this country are decendants of people who were willing to fight and kill for their dreams as opposed to th e masses in asian countries who just dutifully do what they are told, even if they are told to sit there and starve to death.

i am proud of anyone who will stand up and DEMAND what they deserve as opposed to the ones that sat quietly and DIED, doing exactly what our leaders told them to do. and i am outraged because of the weak, the old and the very young that could not fight for themselves, and DUTIFULLY sat where they were told to sit and DIED.

why no declaration of a national emergancy? why were the emergancy shelters in EVERY STATE not opened IMMEDIATLY to get the people off the street? why were these people left to depend on an international organization like the red cross, and private industry to SURVIVE?

we have the means to help our own. WHY were those means NOT UTILIZED?

why, even now, are these people not in emergancy shelters as opposed to massed in stadiums at the generosity of individual states as opposed to a DIRECT ORDER form the federal government?

why are they STILL dependant on the generosity of a PRIVATE bus company for transportation to mass holding areas?

this is a national emergancy if there ever was one.

embarassed becasue a few decided to stand up and TAKE what they needed?

go live in asia.

if it was my bus company i would be goving them all a free ride to the WHITHOUSE. it is THEIR BUILDING. THEY PAID for it. i would take the problem to exactly where it belongs.

and when the rioting started, i would be satisfied that FINNALLY, the people responsible for helping them are having to deal with the problem directly, as opposed to some poor cop who is a victim himself having to deal with the problem.

we have the means. why are they not being utilized?

the moral majority working for you. babies dieing of dehydration? well, lets get this runaway fuel problem taken care of then have a look at what they might need......

you STUPID fools voted for this. enjoy.

I'm neither surprised nor embarrassed about Louisiana.

The sort of behavior we're seeing out of these people is completely in line with their normal behavior. And that's the sort of behavior that made NO a fun place to visit in the first place.

We all knew they were a bunch of half-civilized, mixed-culture, ingorant, self-serving ungrateful louts before the hurricane struck. So they haven't turned into angels because their granny's coffin just floated by with an alligator chewing on it.

Big deal. They're still part of the greatest trailer park there ever was: the USA.
Will NO be rebuilt?
Of course. Because it's the smart thing to do?
Nope, it's not smart.
Because we persevere in the face of adversity?
Nope, we can backpedal with the best of them.
Because it was a classy city that deserves to have its heritage restored?
Nope, because that's what people do. Pick up the pieces, regardless of how dumb it may be as a group.
Because they're free people who have the right to make dumb choices that will be financed with my tax money?
You got it. And I wouldn't have it different.

It'll be a fun place again, when all is said and done. I look forward to partying with some of those snipers and looters in their stinky little cobblestoned quarter in the future.

I was taking a pan of biscuits out of the oven this morning and noticed that it was a "New Orleans, French Quarter" oven mitt on my hand. +_+

I get sick when I think about how horrible it must be in the Superdome... My husband thought the reporters were exaggerating when they started reporting rapes but I told him in those types of conditions where thousands of people have to live in their own sewage in sweltering heat and with little or no food and water, who the hell is going to try and stop a rape when they have their own family to worry about? I can't believe the photos and coverage coming out of there, it looks like a different country. And it's been almost a week. What the hell? :(

I saw that woman being interviewed about the conditions of the Super Dome on Fox. I was outraged that she had the nerve to complain about getting food and water while people were dying of hunger and thirst.

And yes, Totem, there is a revolution that is being surpressed.

A look at history will show you that the poorest class in any country is the most likely to rebel and make communist countries. There are a large amount of organizations with extreme and rebellious views.

Unbelievable right? I recently heard some offhand comparisons made between this jack off and Giuliani after Sept. 11th. The contrast is pretty stark. What kind of a leader runs around spouting off like this basically inciting panic? There's enough trouble on the ground, the people know how ****** up it is, they're there for god sakes. Leaders should be strong and resolved regardless of the circumstance, it doesn't matter if they know the situation is bleak...they need to be giving out instructions and finding solutions.

Why doesn't this ******* just step aside and join the rest of the paniced masses and let Harry Connick Jr. step in to lead these people. That guy has been amazing, he inspires me and I'm not even from the area. Keep his face on TV and let him speak to and for the people, he'll do some good. Then again, a retarded dog could do more good than this moronic mayor without even trying.

Please please do not judge New Orleanians by the disguisting citizens that make the rest of us ashamed of calling New Orleans Home. You have to realize that the people left behind were the poor, sick, and convicts. The criminals were intermingled with the elderly and the children. Just because you are poor, ignorant or not, sick or healthy it does not meant that you do not deserve to be human.

I beleive that if this was too happen in most cities ..that similar occurences would have happened. There will always be poor, sick, and criminals.

These people where/are stuck in urban hell that no one was prepared for. Someone called these citizens savages well ... it's true these people were left behind ... in a state of chaos.. no food, no electricty, no water, nothing ... just nasty smells, crying babys, coldness, water everywhere, dead bodies all around ... I would imagine that if i was in that state ..i too would be feel anger, hurt, sadness, and all kinds of other feelings... and i think all that frustration and anxiety can cause some people to do things that they would not normally do in a normal state of mind.

By no way am i saying that the looters, rapists , and thugs or what not are justifiyed in there actions because of a natural disater and chaos.... but as it is .. New Orleans is a war zone ... If this was another time or country I think I would say well just shoot all the thugs that are looting and hurting other people ..and preventing officials from saving others... but this is the year 2005 and we well have to think about the consequences of our actions ... but if it was me out there and I had a weapon and someone was hurting someone else well I think i might shoot them in the leg or something. kk off track ..

but basically not all southerners are ghetto crimanals waiting for an oppurtinity of disater to steal, rape, and pillage through the streets.. just mostly the ones left behind is all...
