I accept that shit happens. You and I just draw the line at a different point.

Sometimes I wonder if basic survival skills should be taught in schools. It would help such a great deal in this situation. The only reason anyone is dying of starvation is because they rely on others to get their food and water to them.

I thought the same, but contemplated at what I would do. There isn't really much to do in terms of "survival skills" because they don't have ground to stand on. I have read many many books on survival skills, but nothing could prepare me for being set in the middle of a lake without fish and thousands of other people. Without help, they would all die.

What the people need isn't food, water, and shelter right now, they need to get out! Why are there still people there? Why the hell haven't they left yet, or been carried out?

I don't understand why people can't see that no matter how much the town and cities surrounding the area are filling up with refugees, it is still much easier to help them there than it is in New Orleans.

IMHO, I would walk out by myself with a few days food and water(learn to ration people), a stick, and a napsack.

Perhaps.

I'm just asking what difference can you really make?

In cases such as this, the answer is often 'none at all'

Tragic but true

You have the money to buy a U-haul and capabilities to go door to door RIGHT NOW and pick up any food people would be willing to donate. If you want to speed things up, call up some friends or family to help. After you have the whole thing loaded with food and water, find the place that is in absolute need of the most help with the aid of the internet, and bring it there.

Renting a boat would not be impossible either if need be. A flatbottom would go well to carry food, water or people around. Anyone with a credit-card could do so and you might get it for free if you explain what it's for. Make sure to bring a ******** of medical supplies with you and other things of basic need.

People need food, water, shelter, and warmth to survive comfortably. To keep spirits high, any type of entertainment to make the kids happy will lighten up the entire mood.

Correct.

People need food, water, shelter, and warmth where they are

There's no shortage of food and water in USA.

Just an inability to get it to those who need it.

Are you thick? Smiley: oyvey

THIS IS NOT A SHORTAGE!!! THIS IS A LOGISTICAL FUCK-UP!

So that's it then? We should just give up and go the fuck home? Sorry, that's not acceptable.

You can give up on those people, you can let them die. I can't. Why the fu
ck do I give one iota about me in any of this?
You think I need this to feel better? I can go to sleep in my warm, comfortable bed with my beautiful girlfriend and be completely happy with myself. I'll wake up tomorrow happy as a pig in shit regardless.

I've found that I'm not the only fu
cking person on this world. When you gonna look around and realize it?

Seriously, what have you done?

I know I don't run to aid those I should have in the past, but I'm coming to the deep realization that I should. Right or wrong, black or white, these people DESERVE our help. And there is always something more that can be done.

You give up, I'll find some way to help.

US President George W. Bush has signed a $13.8bn measure to speed up federal aid to Gulf Coast areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Donate all the money you want Molish, it wont help anyone.

Get the hell off your moral high horse. You aren't a better person than us because you donated a few meazley dollars.

Is anyone arguing that this wasn't and isn't a logistical fuck up of amazing magnitude? Not that I'm hearing.

Yes, organization is job 1.

No, we're not thick. We get that.

Some people are still hoping that the authorities will get their **** in a group & aid will start reaching those who need it.

While you guys were here ********* moaning and debating the problem.. I was down at the local Red Cross signing up to volunteer. I go for my CPR/First Aid class on the 10th and sometime this upcoming week should find out where they need me. Turns out my medical background just might come in handy.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who have volounteered. They just don't go about telling everyone in a desperate attempt for praise.

By the way Katie, how does it feel to know that thousands of people in New Orleans now have a worse life than you? Pretty good i wager?

Guess what Mikkle? I've always been better then you.
So has about 95% of the rest of the asylum.

At least I tried. What did you do? Absolutely nothing but patronize those people of whom you consider yourself better then.
Pot.Kettle.Black.

Nobby: I completely understand and agree with you. I have since my first post man. But I don't wanna just sit and do nothing. How can you justify that? Your argument reeks of the same finger-pointing child that already plagues the NO government right now.

Blaming everyone else and sitting on your thumbs is not being constructive. Laying the responsibility where it belongs and showing the ignorant administration that the people can do better then them gives great opportunity to do now exactly what you described; to prove that our current government needs to have their asses kick right out the door.

I guess you and I see different means to the same end.

Obviously there is no shortage in the continental US, but the shortage in NO still remains.

I understand what you are saying. It's the government's fault for not being more organized. They could be doing a much better job and it is their fault for the happenings in NO right now. I agree with you totally.

That's not the fact that I was trying to address. I was trying to address this:

That was the reason for my last post. One person CAN make a difference if they put all their energy into it. People are capable of doing much more than they let themselves believe. Most of the time though, we just don't want to, or we are too lazy to care.

My town is holding a relief effort today. I had no idea until I drove by and saw a massive truck with Hurricane written all over it. It felt so good to go through all my clothes as well as my sons, plus get water together and drop it off. They were taking anything they could get their hands on. I hope that what I dropped off will find their way to one who needs it

Today I notice that the donation jar at the checkout lane was empty. I know from experiance that people are more likely to donate if there is already some money in the jar, so seeded it with what little extra I had to give. Then the lady who was infront of me put in the change she had gotten back.

Being disable and on fix income, I can't do much and would be down helping in any way I could if possible. I know that if something like Katrina was to hit where I live, I could be in the same fix as the poor in NO, so I will give all I can, to help those worst off then me.

A former co-worker of mine said that one of his co-workers took this long weekend to go down and kill looters. I haven't seen him on the news, so I'm thinking he didn't go.

I would be down there in a hearbeat if my EMT license hadn't expired. I would just be in the way, otherwise. I am going to get that renewed whenever the next refresher course is availible in my town.

Kudos to all those that are doing what they can.

It would be more than useless, even detrimental, for most common folk to drop what they're doing and head to LA to help out. The immediate neighboring states have enough people volunteering, and each state is sending their own detachment of professional/military personnel for specialized services.

I did get this in my e-mail the other day, though:

Quote:
Date: September 1, 2005

To: All Kraft Employees

Subject: Kraft Pledges $1 Million to Help in Hurricane Relief

This $1M apparently is being provided in the form of Planters roasted nuts and Capri Sun fruit drinks.
