NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans' Charity Hospital halted efforts to evacuate its patients after it came under sniper fire, according to Dr. Tyler Curiel, who witnessed the incidents.

The attack came as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued "a desperate SOS" for the thousands of people stranded in and around the city's convention center with no food or water and fading hope.

Curiel and his National Guard escorts, were returning to the hospital after dropping off patients at nearby Tulane Medical Center, when someone started shooting at their convoy of Humvees.

"We were coming in from a parking deck at Tulane Medical Center, and a guy in a white shirt started firing at us," Curiel said. "The National Guard (troops), wearing flak jackets, tried to get a bead on this guy. "

The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). About an hour later, another gunman opened fire at the back of Charity Hospital.

"We got back to Charity Hospital with with food from Tulane and we said, 'OK the snipers are behind us, let's move on,'" Curiel said. "We started loading patients (for transport) and 20 minutes later, shots rang out."

The National Guard soldiers told staff to get away from the windows, and evacuations were halted.

Charity Hospital has no electricity, no water and the only food available is couple of cans of vegetables and graham crackers.

Evacuations by boat were halted after armed looters threatened medics, and overturned one of their boats.

The sniper attacks were the latest incidents of violence that have disrupted efforts to help people in the flooded city.

You would get the idea that some of these people don't WANT to be saved. Yeesh.

Makes me scared actually. Soon they will think God didn't get enough of them and decide to start taking them out in his name. Yay for religious warfare...idiots.

The city has a hundred year old tradition of debauchery, drunkeness and sexual immorality in the period preceeding a Christian holy period not to mention a deeper tradtition of idolatry and paganism but God's not bothered enough to strike it down until some homos have a parade. Makes sense.

Heh.. reminds me of the radio yesterday. Host and news guy were talking about some park in New Orleans.

Host: So there's this park with a statue of Jesus in it and Katrina blew down all the trees but not a one of them hit or damaged the statue so people are calling it a miracle.
News Guy: Huh. Would've been a better miracle if the hurricane missed the city.

Of course! Don't you know that God hates homosexuals the most? I figure they just needed somethign to blame it on and this parade was an easy way to recruit more hatred into their ranks. Maybe the hurricane was a religious hate crime?

Those crack heads and druggies are some that people are assuming are responsible for the attacks on the rescuers- they're stealing and looting drugs so they can get high >_<

At least that's the assumption.

Some right wing bible thumpers saying that the hurricane was sent to smite New Orleans for the gay parade that was coming up.

It's a lot more than a parade Southern Decadance, the first time I ever went to the "Big Easy" this was going on and it was a good time. Nothing like taking a hurricane and human tragedy to extrapolate ones religous views on the gay folks.

Actually, medical and safety personell are held to a different standard. You cant just up and abandon a hospital with patients in need of care, you cant pack up the police and the other safety officials and leave the innocent but STUPID people who stayed behind to drown.

We had an ice freeze a couple of years back while I was working at Hendrick Hospital here. The town had already told everyone to stay off the roads because it was way dangerous and I still had to drive my happy *** all the way across town, wrecked my truck and still had to show up to work. The year it flooded this town? Yep.. had to find a way through the flood to work my shift at the hospital. Though this time they did offer to let us house on one of the closed floors. One of the reasons I'll never work in a hospital again

Let me guess...the budget for building the ark got cut with the budget to fix the levees...

Speaking of arks, a spot of good news in all this is that the zoo in New Orleans is reportedly doing "fine" (as much as you could hope), is relatively dry and has had supplies of food and water come in from zoos in neighboring states. Presumably the animals were more grateful than many of the people and didn't try firing upon the volunteers.

Unfortunately, and perhaps a little ironicly, the Aquarium of the Americas is a total loss as, without electricity to filter the water and regulate temperatures, the fish quickly perished.

New Orleans was founded by the French. Nuff said on that... ;)

As to the federal funding? The US government spent nearly half a billion (that's with a "B") dollars on programs to repair the levees and flood protection systems in NO over the last 10 years. My bet is that funding was reduced in the last couple years, partly because money was needed elsewhere (like Iraq), but largely because of the incredible amount of graft and corruption in NO itself which is why apparently none of that money went to actually fixing anything in the first place.

The projects were pure pork and the people of NO are now suffering for it. Instead of placing blame on the federal government, how about looking at the local government and asking why they didn't fix the problem that was right in front of them? Contrary to current popular belief, the federal government does not exist so that local governments can ignore local problems. They're supposed to do everything they can to take care of themselves, with the fed only getting involved in cases of national defense.

To contrast, over the last 15 years, California has managed to retrofit every single freaking bridge support in the state. And they *actually* did it. They didn't just take federal funds and kinda pretend they were fixing things. They drew up a plan, figured out how best to protect our bridges from collapse during an earthquake, and implemented the fixes. One has to wonder what exactly Louisiana did with 430 million dollars of federal funds. They apparently *didn't* fix the levees. They apparently *didn't* fix the pumping stations. Place the blame on the people who mismanaged the funds in the first place...

It's really pretty simple to see what's going on, in regards to people firing on rescuers. A criminal element exists in every city. In New Orleans it may be a little bigger than some other places, but it exists everywhere.

Now, there's no governing body and no law, so the criminal element has control, and they don't want to give up power. They can do whatever they want and get whatever they want with no response from law enforcement.

So you're saying that when there's a loss of law enforcement and government in a region, small groups of armed gangs may rise up and cause violence and such without any sort of large scale organization or "cause" behind them? They aren't doing it because of some complex social or religious ideology? Imagine that...

Yeah, that was a pretty lame comparison. Not to mention blatant attention-whoring as Gbaji tries to hijack the thread and make it all about him and his "I'm always right about everything" attitude.
