(Grand Rapids, August 12, 2005, 7:27 a.m.) A ruckus on the radio clogged up 911 emergency lines in Kent County Thursday night.

24 Hour News 8 was contacted by Grand Rapids police after a threat by a pair of local disc jockeys to drown a dog. Police say they are aware of the threat and urge folks not to call 911 about it.

The DJ's said they were doing it to raise awareness about the recent West Michigan drownings. The morning show in question is WKLQ in Grand Rapids.

24 Hour News 8 spoke with one of the radio personalities who said they plan to do it. Police want to find out where the felony will take place but say the station won't answer.

FOR EVERYONE CONCERNED OVER THE FATE OF MINDAY, NOW THAT YOU KNOW SHE NEVER EXISTED, GO TO YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER AND RESCUE ONE OF THESE DOGS ON YOUR OWN, AS THESE ANIMALS ARE BEING PUT DOWN EVERYDAY.

Thanks to everyone who phoned or emailed in, for taking the time to express your comments and concerns. Jim and I hope that you also took the time to listen to the finale this morning just after 8am.

To set the record straight, the entire stunt was a complete fabrication. A combination of dog sound effects, recorded audio of our stunt guy outside the building and personal recordings I did of water splashing using my 3 year old son Logans kiddy pool.

Again...THERE WAS NO DOG. (You can actually see where we found the photo of "Mindy" here http://images.google...&btnG=Search+Images)

After the reveal that there was no dog, Melinda Howard of the Greater Grand Rapids Child Safety Coalition was kind enough to join us live on the air to talk about child safety. She will be leading a child safety class today at Millennium Park between Noon and 3pm.

There was never any intention to drown a dog or bring harm to any animal what so ever. What you heard and the way the show was executed was exactly as we had planned.

What we did this morning, we feel needed to happen to grab the proper attention about the dangers of children and water related accidental deaths.

I have a 3 year old son whom I love dearly and 2 cats. In no way would I, Jim or anyone on our staff bring harm to any animal.

Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost there loved ones this week. We hope our actions over the coarse of the past few days had enough impact to make a difference.

If you wish to help the family of the tragedy that happened at Millennium Park.
You can send donations to Trey Taylor's family via this address:

Thanks for listening. Your added comments helped to propel the show and what we wanted and succeeded in accomplishing.

Justice and Jim

So were the DJ's justified in creating the stir to raise awareness in light of the recent child drownings, or were they negligent and irresponsible in perpetuating a stunt that may have seriously impeded local emergency response lines, and continuing even after they were notified of the situation?

The whole issue was spurred on by two drownings in the area that have occured within the last week

I think they fucked up. There are much better ways to raise awarnessand alert people than pulling dumbass stunts like this.

Idiots!

I knew there was a reason why I didn't listen to them. Hopefully they fire them and hire a real morning team. (Rick and Scott for the win!)

God, I miss those two hehe

I dunno, after Rick showed up to work drunk for the last time and they sent him packing Scott tried to hold the show together but without Rick to anchor him it really just fell apart.

Free Beer & Hotwings are not all that bad, but I agree that the show just isn't as good as Rick and Scott was. I just can't see any local radio station willing to take the chance with "Rick's little problem". Especially, not after the huge months long on air deal he made about his recovery and rehabilitation.

There's no show without Rick.

On the other hand, I'd rather listen to a drunk Rick than a frikken PA prank from 1982 with a bunch of idiots thinking it's actually funny.

Just sayin'
