Well, this is why I'm still awake, puttering around posting here. The shower peaks during daylight hours (US time) Aug 12 (Friday). However, the best viewing time is supposed to be midnight to 5am of Friday Aug 12 - no matter where you are in the US. Should be some early Saturday morning (Aug 13).

If you live in Europe, your Saturday morning (early hours, midnight to 5am or whenever it gets light) would be the best time (I think).

The expected rate is about 60 per hour at peak - but you'd only see this if you could see your whole sky. A really good year would be on the order of 120 per hour. I think the background rate, e.g., if you just go out on a random night, is something like 5 per hour, however it depends on time of year and the hour you are out watching.

Early morning hours are actually better then evening hours essentially because you are on Earth's "leading edge". (This is true no matter where you are on the planet, it is sort of the definition of what "morning" is).

Meteor showers are mostly (all?) due to the Earth moving through the dusty tail of a comet, so the nearer the comet is to the Earth's path, the "better" the year. This leads to speculation that any kind of periodic extention event on Earth could be due to some kind of "killer comet" who's (very dense) tail the Earth would move through periodically.

Well, from my front yard, it is very nice - but my visibility is not so good on account of the city I live smack in the middle of and it's light pollution and the neighbor's trees, etc. I counted 10 between 11:37pm and 1:31am, PDT, four of which occured after 1am, so I'm sure it is getting stronger. However, I have to turn in, despite the show.

Enjoy.

Around 12:30 I went out and it was clear, but really hazy. I tried again about 1:30 and it was clear. I saw a few of them shooting by, but thought I would wake up around 3:30 and come star gazing some more. So I set my alarm, and took a nap. When my alarm went off, I stumbled out of bed, down the starirs and onto the deck, only to find the ******* clouds had come and obscured my vision. Smiley: motz
