Anyways, back on topic, what exactly is anyone planning to do about this? Is Bush going to make sure the new Iraqi government makes laws against this sort of treatment of women, or what?

Shut up Dark!!

If GW every reads this **** he'll end up sending another 200,000 troops over there to hunt down and kill the people who are doing this and then keep them there until they come home in black bags...and it will be all your fault!!!

Do you want that blood on your hands?

Moron

Silly Aegis, you know Bush can't read.

this is practiced throughout the middle east. it is not spacific to Iraq, and infact was against the law in Iraq under Hussins rule.

it is against the law in Saudi Arabia too, yet it still goes on there also.

we are not in Iraq because of their human rights record, or we would be in iran, jordan, syeria, saudi arabia and every other **** hole in that giant sand dune too.

I find it funny that because its now happening in Iraq it is all of a sudden getting attention for its wherabouts. This sickening practice has been going on for years, and as Flea pointed out, in many areas its even worse. Many of them get stitched together and when married, the husband either can be a loving husband and take the time to cut the stitches. Most of the time he just bashes at it until the stitches tear apart.

It's a brutal practice, demeaning the woman, again another way to ensure that a woman is looked at asless than human in their societies.

Much like male circumcision, the staunchest advocates are the older generation, and they use the ol "I got it and my coochie's just dandy/you're no better than me/it's cleaner" excuse.

A nice primer for the uninformed.

this really has nothing to do with iraq as a country, and more to do with the customs of tribal villages in less populated areas of the middle east.

granted, as a whole, the middle east treats women as second class citizens, pretty much the same way we treated african americans for decades.

the practice is used amoung the tribes to make the woman more pure and ensure when she is married off, she will be a virgin.

they think no more of it than we do nutering a dog.

most more populated areas have laws against this mutilation. they have laws against killing a woman who was raped too, adn it still happens.

as appaling as it is, it is no worse than how we treated the american indians, or the african americans we brought over here as slaves. if you look at it less from your perspective of being raised in a more civilized society, and more as a people left behind when the world advances, it really is not that big of a deal.

it has only been "one" generation of people since we first drilled oil in saudi arabia in 1936. that is not alot of time, historically speaking. not enough time for an entire people to shed arcaic customes.....just because we tell them too.

like slavery, adn then segregation here in the U.S., it will come to an end eventualy with time, and exposier to the rest of the world. in time, it will come to an end of its own accord WITHOUT our interferance.

or we can rush in to force them to catch up with the capitolism program, and in the process kill half a million people....oh wait...we already have......all for the sake of the few thousand people who might be mutilated between now and the time they become more moderate.

our cure is significantly worse than the disease.

the best approach would be education, and exposier to the rest of the world. we dont have to shove it down their throat, all we have to do is make it avialable, and let them reach for it.

like china for example.

all on theri own, they are moving from a trible communist dictator ship to having limited elections of a sort, and embracing capitolism on a limited scale. without us butchering several hundred thousand human beings to shove it down their throat.

the working sucessfull model for stability and economic proparity across the world is democracy and capitolism. they will all embrace it sooner or later. it is all a matter of time.

war is really obsolete. all we are doing is butchering people to make happen what would happen ANYWAY in time, probably with significantly less bloodshed.

this mutilation going on in the middle east has been going on for as long as long as theri have been people in the middle east. why this would shock you more than the hundreds of thousands of people being butchered, or the women who get raped then hung or shot for being impure is perplexing to me.

its like watching the third rich linning up civilins along a ditch and mowing them down with a machine gun, and you standing by the ditch full of blodies making an issue out of some man beating a women on the next block.

in te context of what is going on there ATM, really, this is not much of an issue. there are curently bigger problems.

While I agree the practice of female genital mutilation is so abhorrent that it hardly bears mentioning, I just have to remark, only quasi-facetiously, on the subject line:

Surely you don't think Dubya is such a champion of women's health issues that they would have any bearing on his stance in Iraq? This is, after all, the man who appointed a surgeon general who as a physician refused to prescribe birth control pills.

bush and the republican party is about the fat getting fatter, adn the poor paying the price.

iraq is just the tool to that end.

God bess America. if you cant make slaves out of them, then by God, you can still have them butchered so a decent christian bussiness man can make a decent living.

we feed the rich while we bury the poor. lyrics to a song. art immitating life again.

welcome to the moral majority.
