New Scientist wrote:
Men who spend big money wining and dining their dates are not frittering away hard-earned cash. According to a pair of UK researchers, they are merely employing the best strategy for getting the girl without being taken for granted.

Using mathematical modelling, Peter Sozou and Robert Seymour at University College London, UK, found that wooing girls with costly, but essentially worthless gifts – such as theatre tickets or expensive dinners out – is a winning courtship strategy for both sexes.

Females can assess how serious or committed a male plans to be and males can ensure they are not just seducing 'gold-diggers' – girls who take valuable presents with no intention of accepting subsequent dates.
[...]
When they measured the different outcomes of all the steps, they found the best solution for the males was to give extravagant, but intrinsically value-free gifts the vast majority of the time, while giving gifts of material value very occasionally.

The model showed that if males gave valuable gifts too often, the females would start to exploit them: the males have no clue as to the females’ real intentions in the model. Put simply, the females just take the diamonds and run. But when the gifts are worthless, an uninterested female has little incentive to accept, gaining no return on what could be just turn into the simple waste of an evening. Only girls who are serious would bother to go the distance.
Story

Setting aside the inherant goofiness of "mathematical modelling" for determining this stuff, they were talking about this on the radio this morning and the females all agreed that an extravagant experience such as dinner, a boat ride, theatre, etc was more likely to win them over than expensive gifts with a high resale value such as jewelry. "Essentially worthless" in the story above meaning "unable to be resold", not "didn't cost you anything". You can buy a lot of dinners for the price of a diamond necklace so consider this your Jophiel Thrifty Dating Hint.

Ladies? Anyone disagree?

Actually, you're encouraged to "buy love with dinner and theatre tickets". Trying to buy love with diamonds encouraged gold-diggers. Like Nadenu Smiley: grin

In all fairness, I think my love should be bought with both theatre tickets/dinner and diamonds.

Just to be sure.

Ahhh... but it was during a trip to Italy (no resale value) that you put out and got knocked up! The theory is sound!

I think the "study" is inherently flawed. Where's the control group of couples who did cheap but fun things together?

I would submit for consideration the idea that the men who planned to spend TIME with the objects of their interest and admiration were more successful than those who only planned to spend MONEY. That is, the activities themselves were the lure, not the expense incurred.

In other news, did you know that rape is caused by ice cream? Incidence of rape goes up in the summer, as does consumption of ice cream; therefore they MUST be related.

Sam hit it on the head for me. It's not so much the amount of money spent on dates as it were, or the gifts I am given, but the time spent together. As long as you both have fun, why should it matter if it's spent at a batting cage laughing at each others misses or in a theater? All I care about is seeing that the man cares enough about me to get to know me and have a fun time.

You have to make sure the Tequila is of very high quality. Silver Patron or better, if you plan to go that route with me.

Jonwin won me with dinners, museums and theater. Very little alcohol involved since I can't drink wine and shouldn't actually drink at all but love a good beer. Tiquila good for one night only, but I promise it will be quite a night.[/]

edited because I forgot to log in as myself and posted under Jonwin's account

edited again because Elne can't spell as well as Jonwin can.

As long as you are not paying too much attention to me and treat me with disregard, I'll put out in order to get your attention. I'll later realize that you are a pig, and then move on to the next guy, who will repeat the process. All I care is about finding someone that barely cares about me.

Repeat process ad nauseum until someone finally hits them upside the head with a 2X4 and then they wake up and try to find a nice guy.

At around what age does this happen? Is it different for different girls?

I think Fender is talking about the point in the drinking where she starts throwing up. That could be an unpleasant turn of events. Have you ever read a Tucker Max story?
