So I buying groceries, the other day when low and behold, the grocery store has the newest Harry Potter book for sale. My Son enjoys the books so for the whopping price of $19.99 i buy a copy.

Flash forward to day...I recieve a call asking me if I purchased a copy of the Harry Potter book, and that they are very sorry and if I can return it for some employee accidently but the book out early and they weren't supposed to sell it. I laughed at them and hung up.

But it got me thinking, I used debt to buy my Groceries, they were able to get my name from my bank account but from there trace down my unlisted phone number to get a hold of me, for this book. I really like to know how much this store must be being fined to go through all this trouble for selling the book early, cause I wasn't the only one buying the book, I saw about 6-7 other people also grab a copy.

Well I guess it is a big deal, since the books are really popular. You could put the entire thing online and cut down sales or something. Only 4 days early though.

Did you use one of those shoppers cards that many grocery stores are now using?

My first question to you is do you have a check cashing card or a savings card with the store in which you purchased the book.

If you have one of these more than likely the name on the card or the checking account number tied into the debt card is automatically linked to your savings card or check cashing card and this is how they got your information.

If you do NOT have either a check cashing card or a savings card go back to the store and demand to speak with the General Manager and find out how they got your personal information. If they in fact did get your information from the bank contact a lawyer. I am not talking about sueing anyone or anything like that but your bank is not allowed to give out your information without your consent. This is a MAJOR credit fraud/identity theft issue which is why banks are not allowed to do it. I suggest having your lawyer watch your credit for the next few months and definatly switching banks immediatly.

FYI IIRC stores are fined up to $10,000 for each sold copy of a book or CD sold before the release date.

Yep, I work at Blockbuster and it's the same fine for releasing movies early. $10,000 each.

It pays the bills.

Well, not really, but it keeps the gas tank filled at least.

And it's better than fast food, and I can work around my school schedule.

Did this actually happen to you? Or did you just read up some stories such as this one and think to yourself... "sounds like a good story for the asylum".

If indeed it happened to you, sucks to be you. Everyone who agreed to return the books in Vancouver will be receiving an autographed plate by J.K Rowling.

I doubt your bank gave out the info, but finding people isnt that hard, they already had your full name and the area you lived in.

Kast is right though in that the club cards grocery stores use have your info and some times actually leave the info easy to look up at store level. Others they would have to explain to corporate what happened, which would be a bad thing.

If the store was smart they should of offered something for the return of the book, like you get your book free and 50 dollars of your next order.

Tell them you will bring it back for $5000, they will save $5000 and you can even take it in store credit.

And when they arrest you for blackmail, you will have plenty of time to read law books to see how stupid of a statement that was...

Nothing wrong with that.

Dunno when people in this country became so scared of taking a job that isn't CEO-this, executive-that.

It's as if there's some shame associated with a job that isn't high paying or being asked to clean up something. I believe the shame should be associated with the hubris of deciding you're too good for some work. I wish slow and humbling starvation upon each and every person who deems themselves above work. I won't miss them.

I owe Blockbuster about $7. They threatened to send Johnny Law after me but apparently decided that it cost more than seven bucks to recover seven bucks.

Come to think of it, the Blockbuster I owed the $7 at closed down. I'd like to think they're related somehow.

haha, actually I read the article about this happening and the details sounded oddly familiar.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050711/en_nm/media_potter_canada_dc/nc:785;_ylt=As6yhZwje5AuNa9s.Bv6EqJREhkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

That's not the original article, but the original mentioned 6-7 people as well. I was wondering if this person recieved a gag order, or, if the OP is lying.

Wow that is really odd that such a small demographic was able to get their hands on the Potter book so early, and even more odd that someone who posts here was included in such a demographic.
