Peace on EarthFollow

Kinda a poll.

With as young a species as we are, and all the warring religions, governments, and idealogies, do any of you think we will attain lasting peace on earth in the next 1000 years?

Define "peace on earth". I'm guessing you mean somewhere between a drunken fistfight in an Irish pub and World War III but a little clarification would be nice.

I doubt it in any event.

no more war. People have enough understanding of each other to put away arms and settle disputes through dellegation and compremize. I know its asking alot but it has to come sometime.

If you mean peace like Star Trek defines it, in the form of the Federation, I don't know. If we ever got to that point, I really think it might take longer than 1000 years. I mean, how long have we been here now and we're STILL little better than we were in the beginning.

Ok, so we don't usually behead people anymore, burning at the stake has gone out of fashion, and full out blood-letting battles a la Braveheart have gone by the wayside, but we're still pretty violent and childish

Do you count rebellion? Uprisings? I doubt there'll ever be a time when every minority group (not racially but of a minority opinion) walks away from the bargaining table thinking they got a fair shake by the Powers That Be and returns home satisfied.

Who knows? Find me a "more evolved" species that progressed through mankind's development and now lives in complete peace and we can talk.

Maybe the more evolved you get the better you're able to conduct warfare. Fists, rocks, sticks, pointed sticks.. etc.. guns, missiles, nuclear warfare and so forth. Until the entire species becomes so amazingly evolved that the most evolved kills off the rest and becomes God and creates a new crop of beings Smiley: grin

Never. Violence is too embedded in the culture, with too many symbolic and ritualized meanings.

Peace on earth will happen within the next 1000 years, it will happen in the post-apocolyptic world that comes about when we nuke ourselves into oblivion. But it'll only last for a very short time before the different tribes of survivers start killing each off for resources.

I think it is doubtful to EVER have lasting peace. Even if there was lasting peace, I think that all it would really be is absence of war being incorrectly labeled as peace.

In order for it to actually be peace there would have to be a hell of a lot more than just no war. Battling intolerance, bigotry, entitlement, and things like that would be harder than stopping the actual physical conflicts which is already a huge task.
