Hurricane DennisFollow

A lot of people here in Pensacola had a hard time after Ivan. Homes destroyed, power out for weeks at a time, undrinkable polluted water. Yet we joined together as a community and rebuilt. Charities and other organizations helped those less fortunate, power trucks from over 22 states volunteered their services to restore power, and businesses gave massive discounts on materials needed to rebuild people's lives.

Fast-forward 10 months. Hurricane Dennis is moving into the Gulf of Mexico. Cuba reports thousands either dead or missing. And the projected landfall for Dennis is exactly the same as it was for Ivan. News reports state that the storm will most likely be as strong, if not stronger, than Ivan.

Even with all the rebuilding that's been happening, you can't drive anywhere in Pensacola without seeing blue-roofs still on houses. The mayor put out this morning that over 600 tons of debris are still sitting around from Ivan, creating missile hazards that weren't present before. Translation: We're fucked.

Now for the best part. I don't get to leave. I'm working security detail on the navy base, and will most likely be outside during the entire storm. Couple that with the knowledge that my new house could get destroyed, and I'm in a great mood. Pensacola just issued mandatory curfew starting at 9:00pm, so I probably won't even get to come home tonight after work.

And so, to summarize this rant.

1. Fuc
k Pensacola, Florida.
2. Fuck the military not letting me evacuate.
3. Fuc
k all these Goddamn fucking hurricanes fucking up my life all the fucking time.
4. What the fuc
k?

Sounds like its time for you to move. I hear NC is pretty nice. I'll let you know when I get back.

But in all seriousness, stay safe and watch out for flying cows. They're a ***** when they hit.

so your complaining about another hurricane thats going to hit your home?

any person who builds a home that cannot withstand the local weather has no right to complain when it blows down.

It's like building at sea level with no sea defence and then complaining when the tide comes in.

Brick and mortar are your friends, build well build to withstand and then maybe just maybe that house wil still be standing after the next fourty or fifty hurricanes hit it over the next 60 years.

You do that storms are going to get worse because of the American Govenments refusal to commit to genuine enviromental reforms right?

Sympathy, yes i have some for you but i have more for people who have no choise about the trouble that afflicts them.

Good luck next week, hope you are around to hate me for my comments.
#4 Jul 09 2005 at 12:34 PM Rating: Good
I don't hate you, but there are some points I'd like to correct.

1. My home is in fact made of brick, with a new roof built to withstand 200mph sustained winds. But that won't help if an oak tree lands on it.

2. I didn't choose to come here, I was given orders to come here. Why the fuck would I want to leave San Diego to come to Pensacola, Florida? That's like trading a Viper for a Pinto.

3. Thanks for the vote of confidence, I too hope to be around next week.

Well I'm off to work and I might not be home for awhile. So to mimic what I posted over on Angsty's boards:

ESAD, GFY, drink bleach, and God bless. See you when I see you.

How's the weather around Orlando right now? I fly out Monday from DFW to Orlando International. I'll be in the Orlando area for about 2 weeks. Needless to say I'm a bit scared ******** of being caught in the hurricane.

It doesnt look like its going anywhere near Orlando from what I just saw. Local forecast brings it to the western most part of the upper Fl and heading straight towards tennessee. also, it's been updated to a Category 2, which isn't as bad as it was earlier this week.

And let's just hope she's not my neighbor.

Seriously, I think we get more hurricanes here than the coastal states. Rain, rain, rain... winds, tornadoes... yay!

Nah, you dont live in Crossville do you? That whole town could use a house dropped on it.

I'm 30 minutes east of Crossville, heh. So, as long as it's not a huge house, I should be ok.

We're usually in almost all the hurricane's paths. And yeah, it's supposed to dump rain on us. Starting tomorrow, I think. I'm west of Knoxville, btw.

For all those nameless faceless gutless pieces of sh*t that often frequent our beloved forum THAT is how to respond to a post.

Take notes, because the majority of you suck.

Speaking of which, I just picked up the book Wicked, which was the basis for the broadway show going on about the life of the Wicked Witch of the West. I heard good things about it so I figured why not?

Nad, I wish you luck this week. It looks like it should be hitting you guys on Monday. Hopefully by then it will only be a TS

Thanks, but I'm sure it won't be any big deal. Seriously, almost all hurricanes blow through TN, unless they go straight up the east coast. We get some strong winds, but nothing major.

We havent had a Hurricane in 14 years and Im getting itchy for some kind of cool weather. We very rarely get tornadoes. The best we get are the Noreasters, which are kind of cool, lack the OOMPH you get with a good wild wind, mixed in with some lightning. Plus, I hate the cold!

Well, I am in Mobile, AL, and that mother is headed right for me. :(

Yep, it just got up to 135 mph, category 4.......I know it's a fact of life on the Gulf Coast, but sure is annoying....

Can't decide whether to ride it out at home, or to head to the airport where I work. They've offered us the use of the facilities during the storm....this sucks....lol

Reporting from my house in Panama City, Florida here. Cat 4 with winds of 145 mph now and we've started to get hammered by heavy wind and rain only expected to get worse. Also reports from a couple friends outside the city that lost power. I'll stay on as long as I can. Best of luck to the rest of you that live in the path and stay safe.

any person who builds a home that cannot withstand the local weather has no right to complain when it blows down.

It's like building at sea level with no sea defence and then complaining when the tide comes in.
-------------------------------------------------

the "local" weather you are refering to is an every increasing anomoly for florida. andrew was the first major huricane to hit florida after a 30 year lull. last year, 4 in a row, was the first time multiple hurricans hit florida since the 1930s.

they USED to be rare occurances.

as far as building something to withstand a hurricane, florida has the toughest building codes in the united states. hurricane andrew ripped concrete and brick homes right off their foundations. some of the best built homes in this country, flattened.

in the bahamas, ironically, where the word "hurricane" is as common as the word "summer", homes have been built for years out of solid poured concrete. the walls are poured solid cement. in this country, that would make a typical 200,000 dollar concrete block house cost about 500,000 dollars.

so, do we condem the entire east coast and gulf of mexico to building homes only about 2 percent of america can afford? doe an occurance that used to be "uncommon"?

not gonna happen. thats what insurance is for.

i live in miami. my motto, if the wind is 100 mph or less, i board up and ride it out, 100 or over, alstate can come board it up if they are that concerned, i certainly pay them enough to, im gone. i leave. only an idiot would try to ride out winds over 100 mph. you can kiss ALL mobile homes and wood frame houses by by once you hit the 100 mph mark. the flying debre alone would kill you. a 2x4 traveling over 100 mph will go right through a concrete block house.

dennis is over 140 mph. nothing in its path will go unscathed. a conctete block house stands mabe a 50/50 chance. mabe.

if you cannot leave, get to a hurricane shelter. leave the animals, they are not worth dying for. find shelter.

most public schools are made from poured conctete walls, specially if they have more than one storie. plan ahead.

if you are in the path, you are rolling the dice with your life and the lives of your familey if you stay. get out or find a local hurricane shelter.

for you who volenteered to enslave yourself to what ever politician is in charge of the country at the time......whats the differance between a hurricane and a bullet. suck it up.

At least we're not going to get directly hit by the damn thing. Smiley: mad
