Air Travel and why I am a happy PessimistFollow

Okay this is kinda rant and kinda a call to see if there are others. For my work I travel, not a ton but enough to keep me staying at nice hotels and getting free trips. I have noticed that only roughly 1 out of every 4 trip is uneventful, meaning I get on the plan and arrive at my destination. Generally I get the following.

Direct flight to St. Louis = airline lost my luggage and took 5 days to find it, which left me teaching in jeans and tee shirt and back at home by the time they found my luggage.

Direct flight home from Kansas city = scheduled for the 10:30 am flight home, board plane at 11:45pm due to line of clounds somewhere between Kansas city and my house.

Direct flight to tampa = delayed 5 hours to mechanical failure of right engine.

Direct flight to home = delayed 10 hours due to lighting

Connecting flight home = delayed to mechanical failure conncetion missed

These are just some of the ones that are pretty much normal for me when I travel. I still have one suitcase somewhere in the system that they cannot find. So when I travel I never expect to leave on time, and I never check luggage. I always expect the worst and smile when it happens cause at least it was not a surprise.

You would think I would be angry about the airlines but I am not. Does anyone else have this kinda luck when traveling by airplane?

I've only had a single issue while travelling via air (mind you, this is out of only eight or nine round trips) and that was a baggage-handlers' strike upon arriving in Paris. Took about four hours for the bags to get unloaded from the plane. I don't really blame the airline directly for that, though. Every other time's gone pretty much smooth as silk.

I travel a lot and mostly been pretty on schedule. Baggage missed my connection once on the way to Rio - I carried no hand luggage - that sucked.

I've only ever had one bag misplaced. Unfortunately it was a dive bag, so I did a complete dive trip using borrowed and rented gear. OH THE PAIN.

Other than my dive bag, though, I tend to travel light. Usually I can get by with a carry on bag.

So in summary, internal US flights are shite, yes?

Never have any problems with internal UK, European or transatlantic flights, but the general standards of efficiency in US seem pretty shoddy.

Not a judgement, just a statement of experience.

i have done a lot of travles both in the conus US and throughout Europe. i do not travle near as much as i used to in the past 8 years as i own a small business now, but when i was travling a lot and when i still travle, i have been rather lucky.

most of the time if there is a major delay it is weather related and that is no one to blame but my own for travling that time of year.

i have been very lucky to never have lost baggage, but have had 24hr delays in departure times due to mechanical and medical reasons on the same flight. heck that same flight we almost lost the tail section of the plane. that was a bit scary to say the least.

since 9/11 i just add an extra hour to my expected arival time for the departing flight. only 1 time did i have any issues and that was the silly computer not knowing how to read my business Visa card as my business name is rather long and the system was not built to handle that many characters in a name.

seems like a few of your trips were weather related as well. the mechanical issues i would look into not flying that airline again and i would tell them that and the reason why you will not fly their airline again. file enough complaints like that to both the FCC and to the airline HQ and they will fix it in time. until then find other airlines to travle.

Pretty much the case that US flights are **** in general. Also the whole thing about now you have to take off your shoes every time you go to the airport is just a tad bit goofy I think, and strangely standard now in airports across the country.

Every other country I've been to always had such nice flights that were always so comfy in comparison to US flights(Singapore Airlines rules I think seconded by those Nipon-Air people in my opinion).

I can just hope that either they stop the bullsh
it over the next few years. Though it probably would be more likely that Bush would start to shit golden eggs that he would use to pay off the national debt and would cause China(be reaction to his generosity) to spontaneously combust releasing swarms of butterflys that would travel the Earth releasing a small dose of psychoactive drugs in the form of butterfly sweat that would cause everyone to feel really nice a few days while at work and then get somewhat disgruntled for a few weeks until it wore off.

Ahh the security issue!

Here we've dealth with bomb-risks for 30 years and do it without pointing metal weapons at passengers' faces.

We don't take off our shoes or bend over and grab ankles, but we do expect full personal and baggage scans. We're used to it.

But we learned how to be secure without treating every passenger like Osama years ago.

I have flown more this year than all the times in 10 years combined and it's only July. I think since February Ive been on 12 planes.

Out of the twelve planes I had only one issue which was supposed to be a direct flght, turned into a connecting flight which we found out as we were taxiing down the runway, and the connecting flight was an hour late. Rather minor compared to what we coudl go through.

Every other time the planes were on time, ready to go, and except for feeling cramped, rather fine. Each one was a different airline too.

Worst issue only recently, when the air compressor broke and we had to wait for it to be fixed. It was hot as hell on the plane, plus it couldn't take off since the ignition was somehow tied into it all. Other than that, just weather delays and such, and I fly quite a bit.
