...about public sentiment about Iraq, I don't know what does. Nothing like the 'ol ratings to tell you what's at the forefront of the American consciousness.

The Hollywood Rreporter wrote:

Three networks delay decision about Bush Iraq talk
Three of the four broadcast networks had yet to decide late Monday whether they would carry President Bush's speech on Iraq Tuesday in front of soldiers in Fort Bragg, N.C. By then, only ABC had said it would carry the address.

The White House formally requested an hour of primetime at 8 p.m. ET for Bush's speech at a time when public opinion polls show the tide turning against the war in Iraq. While there was no question that the cable news channels would cover the president's address, the broadcast networks were a tougher sell.

CBS, NBC and Fox all said they would decide sometime Tuesday whether to carry the speech. Concerns centered on the potential newsworthiness of the speech and the fact that it was being given not in the Oval Office but far from Washington.

"You want to be certain you are broadcasting something that is newsworthy and vitally important to the American people," said one network executive who asked not to be identified.

The networks, unconvinced in initial talks with the White House late last week that the speech would be newsworthy, asked for more information. Sources said a conference call was held at 12:30 p.m. ET with officials from the Bush administration and the networks' Washington bureau chiefs.

But that might not be the only reason for the networks' holdout. While CBS was in repeats at 8 p.m., NBC was faced with the possibility of having to pre-empt or reschedule the heavily promoted original reality series "Average Joe: The Joes Strike Back."

Larry Sabato, a political science professor at the University of Virginia, said Monday that it was a tough decision for the network bosses.

"On the one hand, they recognize if the president actually is going to make substantial news on Iraq, they probably should cover it," Sabato said. "But on the other hand, they realize this White House is famous for constructing political rallies and convincing the networks to cover them with the sole beneficiary being the president, not the American people."

ABC News will carry the event, with Charlie Gibson anchoring from New York.

I wonder what's on the other three channels tonight...

I'd say it says more about public sentiment about Bush. Do we really care that much about his innane and dodgey rhetoric?

This happened for his last address as well. Amusingly, not even FOX wanted to pre-empt their programming to carry it. Eventually the White House had to compromise and move the time of Bush's address and, even then, most of the networks cut Bush short to resume normal programming.

Edit for typos

It would be nice if he and his administration was straight up for once. You can only say "we have won the war" or "the insurgency is in its last throws" so many times over the course of two years before even the slowest of people stop buying it. Yes it is necessary for the US to stick with Iraq now that they are there. Pulling out will only leave you open to a situation that will come back to haunt you 20 years later.

However there are some glaring problems in the way the war is being fought, in public perception etc. Instead of incessently chanting the mantra "there is no problem, america loves freedom, its going to be hard work" until it drowns everything else I think it would be nice to see them do something about it that isnt just for show.

Well, the insurgancy is in its last throes despite predictions that it will last for ten or more years. And, despite the fact that it's Iraqi security forces who will defeat the insurgancy and not US forces, setting a timeline to withdraw will allow the insurgacy to "outlast" us and win the conflict. Luckily, we're winning this conflict as Rumsfeld tells us Iraq is statistically no safer now than it was after Saddam's removal.

What's not to understand?

What's he know that Rumsfeld & Abizaid don't?

I should note now I'm aware Rumsfeld gave a range of 5-12 years and did not explicitly say it would last ten years. I only bring this up before Gbaji decries my lack of journalistic integrity on Allakhazam.com

Firstly damn you iofiel for beating me to Abizaid.

The reason that Bush and Co. are reeling from the "last throes of insurgency" statement (other than the obvious fact that it is untrue):

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The top American commander in the Persian Gulf told Congress on Thursday that the Iraqi insurgency has not grown weaker over the past six months, despite a claim by Vice President **** Cheney that it was in its "last throes."

Abizaid told the panel: "I believe there are more foreign fighters coming into Iraq than there were six months ago." As to the overall strength of the insurgency, Abizaid said it was "about the same" as six months ago.

Thats a suprise. You think he would turned in a resignation, if he knew that Bush would ACTUALLY go through with it?

As for the war, this decieving [to the public] done by the administration has snowballed out of control. In the beginning it was subtle, know it has got out of control. No one knows what to say or when to say it. They have dug themselves into a deep *** hole, soon that hole will cave in. Literally. Killing all of them. Them as in Bush, Cheney, et al.

This will take a term and half of presidency, or maybe a full two terms for a country to catch on. That is of course assuming people will catch on. Bush likes to divert his foul-up with other issues like gay marriage and baby killing democrats. The bible belt of this country loves him and sees him as our protector. Even if the mass does decide he was wrong and we as a country were deceived, this mass would have to get off their lazy asses to go vote and do something about it.

Even living in California (a sure fire blue state), I see ignorance such as this. My mother teaches at a Catholic elementary school/middle school. The priest told teachers and students alike to vote for bush because Kerry is a “baby killer”. Keep in mind that most of these families are relatively low income families of Latino decent. Most of these families can’t even afford financially to vote republican, but do because a church instructs them to do so.

Happened in my fairly affluent Latino church as well. Funny that they would bother when most low-income Latinos usually aren't even citizens.

I'm still trying to figure out how they afford a private school. My mom told me that most of these families spend their last dollar just to make sure these children are at a catholic school. Then they vote for a conservative leader who inherently couldn't give to ***** about them and their shrinking middle class lifestyle.

With his approval rate sinking, President Bush is set Tuesday to address the nation about his "clear strategy" in war-torn Iraq while key Democrats will look for signs the president is willing to shift some policies.

"I think we have a clear strategy for success," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Monday.

Better late than never, I suppose Smiley: dubious
