WASHINGTON - In a narrowly drawn ruling, the Supreme Court struck down Ten Commandments displays in courthouses Monday, holding that two exhibits in Kentucky crossed the line between separation of church and state because they promoted a religious message.

The 5-4 decision, first of two seeking to mediate the bitter culture war over religion's place in public life, took a case-by-case approach to this vexing issue. In the decision, the court declined to prohibit all displays in court buildings or on government property.

Whole text of article here.

They left themselves a gap in there for displays that have historical context (such as their own), but for the most part, I think the "Giant Ten Commandments fountain in front of the courthouse" type of concept is out.

I'm guessing you didn't read the article, but just chose to jump in.

Try reading it, or clarify your point.

If you can't tell right from wrong without the help of a book full of stories from the great invisible guy in the sky then you have more severe issues that need to be delt with than this.

I may be making an incorrect assumption, but with Tomii's thinking as linear as an 11-year old prepubescent girl's chest, I think I'm correct when I say that his/her point is that the law of the land, is in fact based on the Ten Commandments, that the Founding Fathers inserted many religious references into our government at its inception, and so therefore religion is a fundamental basis of government and that references to it, visual and otherwise, are valid and shouldn't be censored.

Whether or not you believe it Esdim, would then only be valid if you are a Founding Father. It's not the point.

I have to admit that the tin breasts of a giant woman with arms upraised was messing with my moral compass and driving me towards premarital sex and impure thoughts.

Dude! That's totally my defense the next time I get a ticket for failing to completely stop before turning right on a red.

"Hey! Officer! Show me the Commandment that says I have to stop before turning on a red! That's what our laws are based on!"

Flea, I read Tomii's statement as saying "This detracts from the validity of out laws since they are based on religious beliefs". I feel it does not because even though the founding fathers originally based much of it off of the ten comandments/bible/koran/whatever, today's laws are followed/broken based on your personal beliefs about those laws, and most often has nothing to do with religion.

Joph put it well. Or did I miss the 11th "Thou shalt not speed" commandment?

Or is that not a valid interpretation of Tomii's post?

I read it as what I posted. Or I may have not read it at all. Or I may have read it and not cared.

What I interpreted your answer to mean was that anyone that believed in some version of God and let their actions be guided by it was a person with "issues" greater than what you were prepared to address. Isn't that what you meant?

Meh, more of if you believe "the only reason I obey the law is because it says so in the bible" then you have other things that need seeing to before you worry about the ten commandments not being posted somewhere.

If only there were some other set of 10 rules that we could display in courthouses. Some 10 fundamental...rights...that our country is based on.

Oh well, too bad.

I'm not so sure any western nation has laws "based" on the ten commandments. Perhaps Tomii lives in Iran or Saudi Arabia or ?

According to: http://king-james-bible.classic-literature.co.uk/exodus/ebook-page-20.asp

The 10 Commandments in Exodus 2:x are:

20:2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 20:6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

20:15 Thou shalt not steal.

20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

I count three of the *ten* that are actually regularly enforced as serious crimes: kill, steal and false witness. Adultery? Pfft.

Most of the other commandments you are totally free to ignore in the US:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Also, those "manservants" and "maidservants"...ya...those are slaves. We don't do that anymore.

reading that reminded me of a time years and years ago, when my best friend and I were bored, high, and reading the bible (weeeha!) when we got to that part she said she was going to hell for coveting my *** and kept pinching my butt all day. About 7 years later we're still best friends, she came out last year and I was shocked, but now that I think back....

ahh memories, strange disturbing memories..
