Part of the problem in America is the obsession with portion size, rather than food quality and natural ingredients in the average diner/run-of-the-mill restaurant. It seemed that it was pretty standard to get enough food to take a second meal home in a box, which I can only imagine gets munched back at at the ranch with a bottle of coke and a bag of Doritos.

When I used to ask people if a particular restaurant was good, they invariably would rate a restaurant on portion size, which is a bit odd to a European.

Has she had her thyroid looked at? I had a very stressful summer last year, lots of overtime and it woke up my latent thyroid condition. I could tell cause I put on weight very quickly out of nowhere, and without medication you can diet and exercise and still not lose a pound. After I got on my meds though, it made it as easy to lose weight as when I was in my teens. Have her doctor do a thyroid check... Worth a try.

I've noticed this too. Most restraunts I go to now have such huge portions you could feed 2-3 people from one plate. And thats just the entree, not including the appetizers or desert. I don't think I've ever been able to finish an entire plate and I rarely take it home with me. If I do thats lunch for the next day.

Yep. If you have no insurance it's gonna cost you, and meds are about $30/month. You should make sure and check it out though, if it goes untreated it can give you heart problems as early as in your 40s.

Youshutup's guide to keeping thin:

Have good genes.

Substitute caffeine and nicotine for real sustenance.

Don't exercise.

Works like a charm for me.

Working for me too, it seems. Luckily I got my mom's genes (short and skinny) as opposed to my dad's (big and heavy). I'm going to end up looking like my mom's brother - lean and leathery, my mental picture of Roland the Gunslinger.

Could be. Her grandmother was also an active person who ended up dying at over 400 points, I think from her heart giving out. Her mother is also way overweight, and works as a nurse, so she's on her feet or moving around all day as well. So it might be some sort of genetic condition.

I could almost bet on it, then. If she tries to diet and gains weight... Hyper/Hypothroidism is genetic. All three women in my family have it, and it's likely we'll pass it on.
