I know this is random, but hey, the boards are slow and I would like some repellent advice. Now that it is officially summer here in Ma, theheat is skyrocketing to close to 100 and the humidity is kicking in. While I am enjoying the beauty of shimmering air sitting next to the sprinkler, I forgot about that one annoyance; mosquitos. They are coming out of the woodwork by 7pm and do not disappear until about midnight. They're in our house as well, so the moment I turn my computer on and the light stand next to it, I have an audience of 50 buzzing around enjoying trying to mess up my typing even more by biting my knuckles. My son is covered in bites to the point he looks like he has chicken pox.

We have used a whole bunch of different repellents trying to keep the suckers away, to no avail. I have by my coputer right now, 3 tyoes of bug spray; OFF Botanicals, OFF Deepwoods, and OFF Family Fresh. I had another lesser name brand too, but I used it all up last night going on a mosquito hunt spraying them down where they rested. I think i have mutated bugs, the way they laugh in my face when I spray myself and family down each night. Oh yeah, and I have Calamine lotion next to all these. I'm not white anymore. I'm Pepto Bismal Pink.

It's gotten so bad, that even though we dont have the money, Mr. DSD is out on his lunchbreak today and getting us one of those mosquitos repellent machines, that keeps mosquitos away from a 1/2 acre area. The smallest ones cost $200 minimum.

While this is good, I still want to find the ULTIMATE bug repellent for when we're out of that 1/2 acre area, or on the off chance this machine doesnt work.

So what do you use to keep the pests away and how well does it work?

My family swears by those new little key chain noise maker ones. They say it keeps them away. You can buy them at walmart in the paint department. You get 3 for like 7 bucks.

Is it something where the noise is constant but you cant hear it? Because that would be way cool if they really work

DONT USE CITRONELLA! I've noticed those little ******* like that ****. You could lite one of those and set it away from you in hopes to attract them away....

We have one of the propane powered mosquito traps. We've set it on the back end of our yard and rarely have any mosquitoes bugging us up by the deck.

It was expensive, but it seems to work really well. It's very nasty cleaning it out though...thousands of mosquito corpses..

We use Tiki Torches filled with citronela fluid. That helps keep the mosquitos away. Or just set up a bunch of Citonella candles all over. They look nice and can sometimes do the trick.

The only other thing that I see working is mother nature. A nice breeze will keep the little fuckers grounded. Also if you are in a wooded area, try setting up a habitat that would be weloming to certain birds. Purple Martins and Barn Swallows are a pretty common bird, that in the right conditions are meet will hang around your yard gobbling up Mosquitos all day.

Different types of feeders or bird houses will attract them and keep em around.

Also Whiporwhils are nocturnal birds that feed on flying insects.

Finally my Canadian expertise pays off.

The mosquito machines are a waste of money. They chug electricty and are not as effective as claimed. When the West Nile virus hit Manitoba/NW Ontario I knew a number of knee jerk reactionaries who bought some and said they worked for shit and when they checked the trap at the end of the day it would only have 20-30 mosquitos in it. Trust me.

Look for a mosquito repellant that contains at least
20-30% "deet" diethyl toluamide. If you have something that doesnt have that much deet or even worse no deet at all then you are wasting your money.

Secondly smoke clears them out so if you are outside and the area you are in permits it a camp fire then use em it does the job. Citronella and such works but you have to stay within the plume of smoke for it to work. Dawn and Dusk are the worst for them so stay inside. Also long baggy clothes to protect arms and legs. Tight fitting clothes can be bitten through.

Sweet smelling perfumes or soaps attract some types of mosquitoes. Keep your grass cut short and get rid of any standing water on your property since that is a breeding ground for them so any bird feeders or tires with water are a no no.

I need something for indoors too though, Sora. Thats where theyre really getting us. I dont understand it either. We have no gashes in our screens, we go out every night and dump any areas that may have collected water nearby.

katie, I think Im going to go out today and grab me some of those keychains. I'll let youknow if I found them and if they work

That Avon skin-so-soft and deet-containing sprays have worked for me, but it never fails that I get bitten in the one area I haven't coated, like my earlobe. Smiley: mad

Actually all types of "ultra sonic" deterrents against mosquitoes have been proven to be ineffective. They dont effect the little buggers.

awesome. I've also found that if we take the odorless garlic tablets a week before we go camping I get bit a whole hell of a lot less. ODORLESS, not the regular ones. They are also good for cholesterol.

We use Citonella candles and Citonella fluid in the Tiki Torches. No bugs at all on our deck.

Edit: DOH Sora beat me to it.

We also have a Chimenia on our deck. It sets off a lot of smoke so that also helps.

As for inside, you may just have a bunch in there that won't leave. Try setting up a bug zapper in a dark room for an hour. That should wipe out the stragglers. Try keeping lights off around your doors. They will congregate around it and when you open the door, even for a second, is enough to let in 4 or 5 without you even noticing,

Citronella does seem to attract them. We're currently fighting an infestation at my mother's house. She has a nice pool and deck in her backyard, but the drainage ditch running behind her house provides a steady supply of mosquitos. The tikki torches didn't work, so we bought one of those "bug zappers" with mosquito bait built in it. I haven't set it up yet, so I don't know how well that will pay off.

And we put some motor oil in the standing water behind the house. It's supposed to form a film over the top of the water and kill the mosquitos before they hatch. We got that tip from my redneck brother-in-law, so who knows if that will help or not.

I don't know about inside the house though. Maybe you could keep some fans going in the rooms you use the most. Keep the air moving around and maybe you won't get bit as much until you can get the mosquitos out of the house.

I grew up in irrigation country. Irrigating = mosquito paradise. You could walk across the lawn and the backs of your legs would be black because they were covered by mosquitos. That avon skin-so-soft was about the only stuff that would really work. As far as keeping them away from your house/yard, I don't know of any real way that works other than spraying for them. The county had a couple trucks dedicated specifically for spraying around town and they'd come out to our farm about 2 times a month and fog the area around the house and barn real quick. I have no idea what chemicals they used though.

The thing that attracts them (females only need blood) is your breath. What attracts them is the Co2 you breath out, so sound will not attract tem at all.

I read some where there was a trap that used a Co2 cart that killed the females by the 1000's and with out the females to lay eggs it thins them out.

Anyone else here about this?

Check thi site out.
