Religon ruins spirituality in my opinion, but that's a whole different argument all together.

I don't believe in an afterlife. Or reincarnation.

So you believe that our conciousnesses are just a coincidence of electro-chemical interactions that are just nicly formed and allows us to "think" and that wehn we die, we just burn out equating our thoughts and memories to candle flame?

just asking.

Is this the belief amongst all other athiests as well?

how are you defining aetheist? One who does not believe in god, or one who does not conform to relgion?

The very fact that so many of us want to believe in some type of afterlife makes me think that maybe there is something beyond this life; almost as if we know what's there, without really knowing. I really hope there is. I don't want to be snuffed out like a candle at the end. But I don't know why I don't want that. Since it's not like I can do anything to change it.

hmmm, I think of Atheist as somone who believes in nothing but stuff that is supposedly 'proven'. Thus believes in no afterlife, no god, no karma, no anything other than the
physical world.

but I guess if you break the word down, is '-Theism' pretains to religion and "A-" pretains to Anti-, then I guess it really is somone who is against only religion.

Well I would fit in to Option B and I already stated I believe in god, afterlife, and reincarnation.

Anyone ever try to "map themselves out"?

that is, try to "see" their past-selves?

it can be interesting.... but it can get alittle obsessing once you catch on.

Mapping out is not a term Ive heard for this particular idea ( seeing past lives) but I have heard the term used in other ways when it comes to reincarnation, life etc.

But the conceot I think Kelvys getting to, is the ability to view your past lives, or at least moments of them. Of course, you have to believe in the possibilities of past lives in order to try it.

What I do is kind of like meditating. I get comfy, relax, get all the mundane things out of my head and try ot have an open, clear mind. I close my eyes and just try to be an open book. Once I'm at that point, I picture a path running through woods with paths on either end. Each one metaphorically leads to a life you have lived. You pick a "path", walk to the end, and when you're out of the "woods" you are now in a moment of one of your lives. I usually see through my own eyes and everything is fairly vivid, from color to texture, smells, sounds, touch, etc.

Everyone has their own technique of doing this, and for some it comes easier than others. But practicing it makes it happen more smoothly and swiftly

Interesting! Thats neat. I'll have to research that.

Theres nothing to really research. You can try it out whenever (just not while driving ok?) All you need is an open mind, a quiet place to be alone uninterupted, and time.
Something to help you out when you start is to keep a little notebook near you so you can write down anything that came into your mind. A lot of the times, things flash through your head that may not make sense at first, but can sometimes add up later

edited to add, if you do find the concept of reincarnation interesting though, please check it out and research it. Its a very cool thing to read up on and learn about.

For me to believe in an afterlife or reincarnation I would have to accept that their is a soul and if we have 'souls' then their must be a God.

Since I do not belive in either the existence of God or souls I cannot believe in an afterlife or reincarnation.

And yes I do believe our conciousness is just the electro-chemical reactions that take place in our brains and when we eventually die those reactions cease as does everything else in the human body.

Some may see it as a cold view to have but then again I see many peoples views of an afterlife 'deluded'. I've always thought that people believe in an afterlife to comfort them for the ineveitable to try and protect them from the finality of it all.

And I would fit into the Athiest category of being Anti-Religon, but many people class themselves as 'Athiest's' but are still spiritual people.

Wow...A couple of threads already this morning about religion and afterlife.

I'm Catholic and yeah we Catholics have the idea of Heaven and Hell. Otherwise, what else was Jesus saving us from?

But almost every religion and faith has some idea of what happens to us after death. Be it Heaven, reincarnation, or what.

I like to think that when we die and we actually find out what happens after the death is God or the higher power sitting us down and saying "I CANNOT believe you believed that crap."

And when you write, what happens? DO you write details, little bits of info? Do you see your other experiences? Ive never thought of writing it down, Im more of a visual person. But it sounds interesting.

Another semi on topic topic; if you have been able to map things, have you ever been able to "go to" the "Otherside" for a visit?

I meant that God or Whoever is saying that we humans got our beliefs/ideas all wrong and out of perspective and that we entirely missed out on what God was trying to tell us to begin with.

I had a vision of heaven the other night. Dean Martin was there, and I could watch my family on a TV in God's office...

No, wait....

That was "The Simpsons."
