Well, my aquarium is finally set up again after the move, and the water has stabilized to the point where it is time to think about adding new inhabitants to the tank. I miss the Snail, and I think he's want me to appoint a successor to carry on his legacy. I have a few choices though this time as far as species go.

There is the yellow apple snail, of which the origional snail was one: http://strike9.com/piercet/Picture+32.jpg
they also come in brown, white, tan, grey and greenish varieties

Then there is the red ramshorn snail: http://www.rps.psu.edu/dec94/images/snail.jpg
It's got more of a maroonish red color, and the shell is curved like a mountian goat horn. THese tend to be a bit more fragile then the apple snails. They come in a range of colors

There are also malaysian pointy snail thingies. they aren't very big, but they reproduce exponentially. could be fun to have an army of snails I guess. they are supposedly good for plants instead of eating them.

I hear that there are some cool purply looking ones out there too, but I have yet to find one.

So what do you think, get another apple snail and feed it radioactive gobstoppers again? or one of the others?

Ooh! Ooh! Red army!

Maybe you can train them to march in formation and drive little snail tanks.

He can pull out his model set and build a scale miniature of the Kremlin and Red Square. However if he devotes that much time to the snails the Wombats might get surly and uncommunicative.

As far as salt goes, you are both sort of right. THe snail is a freshwater snail, but the water snails are not suceptable to salt like the land ones are.

Hmmm, a red snail army does sound like fun. I can get them little yellow hammer and sickle stickers, and then some little remote controlled typhoon submarines to ride around in!

I've always been partial to hermit crabs myself. We had one as a pet when I was a wee little thing, but it escaped into the house somewhere and I never saw it again. I'm thinking my parents found it dead somewhere and disposed of it quietly, because it never stank up the house. A store called Earthbound Trading Co. had a bunch of hermit crabs and painted shells on sale at one of the outlet malls near here, it was pretty cool. There were spiderman shells, and rainbow 60's-themed shells, and camo patterns. I almost got one for my brothers for Christmas, but the dog would have eaten it I'm sure, and my parents would have eaten me.

I like the apple snail. The bright-colored shells are neat.

Yup. They are neat, right up until they mutate and grow to enormous size and proceed to wreak havok upon the world as we know it... ;)

They could make something like that into a movie, then MST3K could tear it apart!

You should track down the Giant Pink Sea Snail.

(10 Geek points to anyone that knows where that came from without googling it)

Here in Japan we can buy these snails from Malaysia that literally are as big as an apple. They're really cool because you can throw in a cucumber and it's gone within an hour. They're like Pirahnas of the slow motion world.

Personally I'd go for the apple snails. They will alos breed quickly if you have your tank in a warm sunny spot and have about three inches of dry space at the top of your tank.
