So, I have a friend who is the vice president of CUSA, the Chinese Undergraduate Student Association, and she's always getting me to go to events with her and such. This time, it was a poker tournament, held on Saturday.
I was one of only 22 people that showed up, but it worked out very well since we had just enough room for everyone, and the tables worked out great. Anyways, I'd been sitting there for about 45 minutes. Nobody at our table had gone out yet ($5 buy-in, but we had $10 in chips and blinds were .50/1.00 by now). The girl at the end was just about ready to go out or double up, the guy on my right was hanging on by his fingernails, and the guy across from me had at least double my chip stack.
Anyways, I get a 10D JD on the deal. I like suited cards, especially when one is a face card, so I check and we're underway (I was big blind). The chipleader at our table calls as well. Everybody else folds.
The flop is a 4C QD AD. At this point, I didn't even look at the value of the cards I had, I was just looking at that Ace. I place a large bet, just something to help build the pot. He raises my bet by almost double, he must know that I'm on a flush draw now, but he didn't know the severity of it.
At this point, I decided that I was feeling lucky and went all in with about $15 worth in chips. He didn't waste any time in calling me, so I turned over my cards, and he turned over a pair of 4s, giving him a set, and me nothing (yet).
The turn comes, no help to me.
Then the river, KD. At first, I only saw the flush. Then I looked closer, and realized that I was looking at a royal flush, diamonds to the ace. Everyone who was there stopped playing and gathered around the table to look at it, almost like some kind of unknown phenomenon.
Anyways, I went out a few hours later, 6th place out of 22. I figure that's pretty good considering that I'm only a mediocre poker player, and some of these guys played like hustlers. I wanted to keep the deck, but it totally slipped my mind as I walked out and headed home. That was the best $5 I ever spent though, and I doubt I'll ever see a hand that good again.
