OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin will reject Canadian participation in the U.S. missile defence program, CBC News has learned.

Link

No to weapons in space, no massive military spending, no foreign controlled weapons on our soil.

The ABM (Anti Ballistic Missle) treaty that was signed by Nixon and Brezhnev in 1972 during the SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) was about recognizing that the fact that mutual annihilation was ensured and no side had an edge therefore unsuring mutual deterrance. They recognized that if one country gained the ability to negate another countries nuclear ******* that it upset the delicate balance.

In 2001 though Bush put an end to the treaty though, despite Russia and China saying that it would lead to renewed nuclear proliferation. Since then the Russians have designed a ICBM that can dodge the US Missle Defense System. A system which to date has only had one or two successful tests out of many.

So yeah score a point for canada in flexing its sovereign rights :P

Come on. You damn canucks have more than enough room up there. Look at all that land in the north! All we're asking for is a few square miles to put up some heavy weaponry in.

Sissies.

My girlfriend's Canadian and she is always trying to convince me to move to Toronto. I keep telling her that there is no ******* way because:

1. It's too damn cold.
2. You think Hockey is played on ice. (No... that's "ice" hockey!)
3. You're the only commonwealth country that doesn't know how to play Rugby or cricket.
4. You're right in the middle of the World's largest nuclear flight path.
5. You get blamed for everything from power outages to terrorist friendly immigration laws.
6. The rest of the world always mistakes you as Americans.
5. And you have huge *** polar bears killing people in the streets.

But I will give you one thing though... You alway know when to give the stars and stripes the good ole middle finger.

Good for you. And congratulations for 1812 as well!

One of the main problems Canada has with the whole North American Missile Defense Shield is that any nukes taken out specifically that are launch that come over the north pole that are taken out are gonna leave a lot of nuclear material scattered over the the Great White North.

Think of the Polar Bears and the residents Iqaluit!!!

But when we have someone we don't like, the polar bears are an easy way out.

That aside, I'm glad that stuff isn't on our land. That way we don't get caught up in your war. And we won't have a reason to ever agree to it. Good for Paul Martin.

canada is a nutrall country. developing weapons would only make them a potential threat, and thus, a potential target.

they do not mess with other countries. they do not do black bag operations. they do not "flex" their military power. they just sit back, donate some cash to non-offensive causes to keep from being called selfish, and smoke some pot.

this was expected from them.
------------------------------------------------------------

about the shield. its USELESS. a money pot for some lucky contractor, but basically as necessary as the concord airplane was. an expensive lame duck,

none of the major powers in the world has the capacity to occupy another major power country, even if they could elminate the opposing army with a few tactile nukes.

second, every major power has the ability to destroy all the major population centers of their enemy. no point in even trying.

third, what good is taking a country with nukes? the land will not be usable for atleast a generation.

fourth, if you DID launch a nulear strike, EVERY nuclear power in teh world would attak you fearing they would be next. humanity would almost completly be detroyed. there is no "winning" a nuclear war.

nukes are defensive weapons only. the idea some country could build a shield to shoot them down, to launch an unopposed strike on another country is ludicris. if the people didnt want the new leadership, you would need MILLIONS and MILLIONS of boots on teh ground for an occupation force. and again, if you just nuked the people, the land would be worthless for atleast a generation. not to mention, they WOULD find a way to nutralize the shield.

all this system will do is force another "money drain" cold war mentality throughout the world. and quite possibly make the world a les stable place.

welcome to the republican mentality. step all over your friends if they dissagree with you, and build the biggest weapon so they cant do anything about it. wooohaaaa, another lucrative cold war on the way.

this does not ensure peace adn stability. havent you had enough if it already?

its not too late for a recall.....

Stop taking credit. You're not British anymore.

anyway, you know we own wehn God is on our side:

August 25, 1814: This tornado struck Northern Virginia and Washington, DC during the burning of the Capitol by British soldiers in the "War of 1812." It was first documented in Leesburg, Loudoun County where a tornado injured two people. The Washington newspaper wrote that there was much forest damage. It is not known if this tornado moved southeast into Washington or if more than one tornado occurred. In Washington the tornado blew off roofs and chimneys through the residential areas. The swirling debris killed and wounded more British soldiers in the city then the American troops did.

Okay am I supposed to be surprised that the same country that has a problem with 40 year old military equipment that can't even put a goddamn chopper in the air for air rescue practices...

Where was I? Oh yeah, how do we expect the Canadians to understand missile defense and Star Wars?? Bit[/u]ch please. It must be great being next door neighbors to the worlds last superpower... What was that? Your military budget might be able to fund a super- slingshot?

Canuck Power!

I shoulda checked this thread out before posting my own.. Here, read!

What? The fact that the U.S. spends 51% of its GDP on the military instead of the health and education of its citizens is suppose to make Canadians feel inferior? Oh please! You are the one who's being treated like a *****, and you seem to be loving it!

I can somewhat see their point of view. I'm still not entirely convinced that those missile silos will be good for anything other than first strike targets.
