Hey I'm all for them and what not, but could you try to keep them to a couple dozen K. It's really annoying to lag while reading a message forum. I'd rather not have to disable avatars.

You have lag from avatars? You should probably invest in more hamsters for your Internet Wheel.
It's not so much the connection, its my browsing laptop trying to animate 961KB gifs Black and white at that. Several times a thread.

I have two suggestions:
1. Quietly turn off avatars.
This solves your problem without ******** at everyone about YOUR problem. You don't see any posts from me asking everyone to use larger fonts because ************ really DOES affect your eyesight, do you? Nope. I took the time to install the handicappers pack for windows so nobody that posts here would have to hear about how I squeeze off four a day just to keep the pump primed.
2. Use a computer that doesn't suck for your browsing.
This also solves your problem nicely. Chances are, it could give you an e-*****, too.

Actually, Mr. winky, Pandy and even the black and white thingie are cached so it's not a big deal. It's the first time that gets ya.

Now take a look at both and tell me if you can see the difference between the two. While that avatar is a bit overboard (800+ frames), at least do us the favor of at least trying to compress it.

I'd love to use my little DJ avatar...pity the blighter is too large in pixel size (quite small in KBs tho).
