Food Lion bought a bunch of their stores last year, they closed down a distrubition warehouse in my old home town about 6 months ago, and they just can not handle the competition.

Of course, some of that has to do with the fact that the whole reason Walmart got into the grocery business was to run Winn-Dixie under. Sam Walton used to work for Winn Dixie and there was a helluva grudge. Winn-Dixie's home territory, Jacksonville has the densest concentration of Walmart stores in the world. Go figure.

Eh, I never really cared for Winn-Dixie. I rather shop at publix.

They pulled out of Cincinnati (where I live) some time ago. I figured it wouldn't be long before they were gone nationwide.

Winn-dixie suffers from the same problem as many traditional retailers who are ailing.

They target their traditional customers. That is a contrast to businesses like Target and Publix which definitely have a market segment that is loyal to them but are actively targeting NEW customers.

Every single shopper who goes to one of them or a Walmart is a customer lost from the traditional customer base, whether they be new shoppers who have gravitated to these chains or an old housemom who has been lured away her old grocery store.

Item availability, prices, line time, proximity to home, all of these are things that affect the decisions of the individual shopper, but IMAGE matters to bring in the masses. It's sad that more people don't understand that.
