Johnny Carson dies at 79
I grew up begging my folks to let me stay up and watch his show. They usually wouldn't let me, so I'd sneak out and hide behind my Dad's chair watching it till I got caught. Every night I'd stay at my Grandma's she'd sit up and watch it with me eating ice cream. The man was funny as hell, and he was a great TV personality.
Every man has his time, it's sad to see him gone.

I got really tanked over the past couple of days. I state this as a precursor to my actual post. It should explain certain things like why I'm still in the bed at 2PM and watching a Wayne Newton biography on E!
So, I'm layin in the bed this afternoon. I don't feel like doin anything. My head hurts pretty bad and I'm pretty sure the rest of me would too if I investigated the situation. E! has a biography on Wayne Newton playing. It seems no worse than anything else that's on prior to watching the Falcons get their asses handed to them at 3 on Fox so I watch it.
Now, I've always held the personal belief that Wayne Newton is actually the devil, but I'm an open-minded sort of character, so I thought this would be akin to giving the defense time on the stand. Halfway through this thing I'm really thinking about swinging by the local catholic church just to see if they really have the holy water up front in those big bowls that look so accecssible to anyone who may need to get a couple of gallons to sprikle around all the entrances to their dwelling. There's something about the way Wayne looks into the camera and smiles that makes me want to pull the covers over my head. He scares me, ok?
Anyway, the program is talking about the late 60s and early 70s when Wayne was subject to ridicule from several comedians, both stand-up and late night. This was before he learned to moderate his voice away from soprano and also was carrying a good bit of extra weight. Everyone made jokes about his masculinity, to the point where he and Liberace were interchangeable in the same jokes. He'd send messages to whoever cracked the jokes asking them not to make jokes about him any more. The only one who blew off his 'request' was Johnny Carson. While this is playing, I start to develop some empathy. Maybe he's just a creepy Vegas singer, right? Wrong. Dreadfully wrong.

Think what you like about Ed McMahon, he was the perfect foil for Johnny Carson for many years, and that does take skill too.

Agreed. When Carson retired, I tried to give Leno a chance to be funny... apparently he doesn't know that's a part of the job description. He tries all sorts of witticisms, but with the horrible timing he has (combined with the chin domination of my living room) they never actually turn into humor - just slightly droll comments. He is a nice guy, but that's not entertaining in the slightest. Dave Letterman lost his sense of humor shortly after he ditched NBC. I'm only 30 and I miss Johnny!
Ahh, when Conan takes over for Jay Crapo I may actually watch the show again.
Johnny, wherever you are, please send down lightning bolts (or a swarm of bees) and help Conan take over sooner rather than later. ^^

Yes I think Mr. Carson will always be remembered as one of the greatest comedians to ever live. The man was always charming, funny and energetic. Plus no one could beat there wife like Johnny.
I loved Johnny Carson! He had a truly remarkable wit. As a kid sometimes I had a hard time sleeping and Id walk into the den hazily and watch late night tv until I zonked out with my mom and sis. I just remembered the guy as so smart and so funny that on those restless nights I'd go to sleep with a smile on my face and the echo of laughter in my thoughts.
The guy had a real gift, and it's sad to see him go.
