Harvard row over sex and science
BBC News Online wrote:
The president of Harvard University has caused a stir among academics by suggesting women have less "innate ability" at science and maths than men.

And quite right too. They should stay home, cook babies and iron my dinner!

this was classic. way to go, asshat. just SMASH everyone's ideas about how Harvaard is NOT a Boy's Club, NOT biased against women, and NOT 30 years behind the times. I had to take a long hard introspective look at how i've been fooled into thinking Harvaard was the most accepting, socially progressive place on earth. Last time i trust Ivy League ;;

Hooray for reactionary college policy. He probobly just did commit political suicide, so I'd be surprised if the Harvard board of trustees is willing to let him still head the school for very much longer. There's going to be a LOT of bad press about it.

Face it, women have less innate ability than men at damned near everything, but the only way to get any friggin peace is to tell them they're our "equals".

I knew there was a reason why Harvard was for smart people! Go Acadamia!

/hurray

To those that don't know Im kidding. My girlfriend is waaay better at physics than I am. But maybe she is just an exemplary specimen of the opposite sex? Hah, I dont care, either way.

Well, I can guarantee (okay, assume) that there are thousands of women smarter, stronger, more agile, etc. than you, based on their innate ability being superior to yours.

While it may be generally true that average women are more agile or men smarter at math or whatever (don't really care to research it), I fail to see the point of raising the issue. The top 0.5% of each gender is superior to the remaining 99.5% lazy-*** slack-jawed yokels of the world. We should pay attention to individuals rather than sweeping generalizations. RPGs shouldn't base max stats on gender either goddamit.

What value can come from noting that a gender or race as a whole is less adept at a particular field or mental/physical pursuit? Just what are we going to change in society because of this? Eugenics? Affirmative action? **** that, let each human mark their own way in the world based on their individual ability. If a woman can never be as strong as Magnus Samuelson, so be it. If a man can never swim the English Channel as many times as what's-her-name, so be it. Who gives a ****.

Women and men are not "equal" in many ways. But a woman can be equal to a man in any way, and vice-versa, in nearly every case. (Except for lactation ability or ***** production or something like that, of course.)

I give the Harvard girls about 1 more night before the protests break out. I wonder if they'll do some bra and panty exploit. You men might want to book a little vacation here. It's beyond cold, but on the chance you might see bras and panties it may be worth it.

Alternately, I could book a vacation to the local Target and see bras and panties in warmth and comfort!

I hope not, because my wife balances the checkbook and runs the finances in our relationship. She is always on my case for not writing in ATM slips for a couple of months at a time. I suck.

It's Harvard. Harvard = old money, and old money = social conservatisim, and is anyone surprised by that?

Personally, I did well in some types of math, and not so well in others. Calculus was something of a struggle, but trigonometry made perfect sense. Same with chemistry and physics, which seems to follow a pattern (to me).

I can do fractions in my head, which impresses the hell out of my brilliant programmer boss.

It's interesting (again, to me) that women tend to test better than men in verbal skills, but lower overall in math skills - yet language and math are closely linked within the brain, and both are linked to musical ability. But how many great female composers can you name?

There's so much as yet unknown about how our brains are wired to work, and how much of that is a result of conditioning. But yeah, at least until Barbie stops saying "Math is hard!" to 8-year-old girls we're not likely to realize the full potential of logic in the female brain.
