So they already have a problem with a lack of translators over there, yet they fire a whole butt load of Arabic linguists for being gay? OK, where are our priorities?

Yeah, I remember a couple years ago when a few were fired here at the Defense Language Institute for being gay. Good to know kicking those awful dirty gay people out is more important than stopping terrorist attacks!

Everytime I think this country is getting a bit more progressive some shit like this happens. Or some **** like GW getting re-elected. Oy.

Seems kinda strange to have the linguists being fired for such an odd reason, though are these linguists dealing directly with arabic people who may feel insulted in their warped little minds? Maybe they couldn't assure safety of the linguists in the conditions they would need to be put in and so they didn't see reason to keep them? Though it probably was just a few higher ups being uncomdortable with the idea they have people working for them who enjoy hot man on man sex and such.

Though this makes me wonder if many people in the army who dislike being in Iraq have tried saying they're gay in order to get out? Would seem kind of nice if you can just try having sex with a couple guys and avoid Iraq. I bet you could even see little gay starter kits popping up on the internet explaining how you could have sex and then possibly take a few pictures as evidence for getting yourself discharged.

The question is, were those soldiers cunning linguists?

I suspect it's because the school's administration couldn't get their mouths around certain sounds that maybe gays can-- like "ng," a common Vietnamese sound unpronouncable for the average American, but is a sound which is surprisingly like that of a man being choked on a large salami.

It's a dead giveaway...

Some Arabs are bi-sexual. They warned us about it before we deployed in 2003 for the war in Iraq. There behavior towards other males is very friendly, sometimes it is harmless but still uncomfortable.

The only reason I could honestly see for them to be discharge is a break down in morale. Like it or not having some one who is gay in a unit is a morale devastator. Also it was probably for there own safety. I have seen guys get the **** stomped out of them for just being suspected of smoking pole.

I don’t agree with it but it is the way it is. Personally the military should let them do as they wish in private, but when wearing the uniform or at military functions abide by the same rules as the rest of us.

We always have a bit of trouble regarding who may be included in the "christian" category, so I thought I'd just leave it to the readers to fill in that blank in their hearts and minds.

Yeah, that tends to happen when 95% of your military forces are made up of inbred rednecks who went into the military because they could spell "army" but couldn't spell "college". Good ol' army boy Bubba Joe Jr. no doubt thinks gay soldier Blaze finds his beer-belly and chewing-tobacco stains teh sexeh.

Honest to god, your country has to be one of the most fucked-up places on earth. The rest of the world is progressing boldly into the 21st century, but America is sidling back into the 19th. It's not just the homosexuality issue either, it's everything. The self-imposed title "Land of the Free" is such utter and complete bullshit. It makes me sick.

At least the food in the US is better than most countries. This is the country that made McDonalds for crying out loud.

Though if you want any sort of progress in culture here in any meaningul way like decriminalization of marijuana or trying to get rid of the death penalty your **** out of luck, so get a big mac.

Well, here in New Zealand we have our share of problems too, but they just don't seem as extreme as things were when I lived in the US. Our main few problems are things like our diplomatic and political relations with other countries, and racial tension between the Maori (our indigenous people, dark-skinned and decended from Pacific Islanders) and Pakeha (in Maori, it means "White Pig" and is the Maori word for anyone of non-Maori descent, specifically those descended from Europeans, i.e. white people). There's a lot of racial tension regarding who owns what. Most recently, there was no small amount of arguing over whether the Maori or the government owned the foreshore and seabed surrounding New Zealand.

But, despite the racial issues, New Zealand's got its collective head screwed on pretty tightly. New Zealand just legalised prostitution last year so that they could regulate the industry and keep the prostitutes safe. Domestic partnership between same-sex couples was just legalised a few weeks ago and will be written into law by May. New Zealand was also the first nation in the world to give women the right to vote. We have several openly gay members of Parliament, one MP is a former prostitute and one is a transsexual. We're very accepting of differences in other people, on the whole.

New Zealand prides itself in being one of the most progressive countries in the world. That isn't to say we just embrace anything and everything: we've banned nuclear energy and genetic engineering, for example. Still, we're "cautious" rather than closed-minded. GE crops are on hold until they determine exactly what impact genetic engineering would have on New Zealand's environment. And nuclear power is off-limits until they find a safer way to use it, as one nuclear explosion could take out 2/3 of our population. This has long been a sticking point in diplomacy between New Zealand and the US, as we won't let their nuclear-powered subs dock in our harbours. The US resents that fact, but we haven't budged on the issue since nuclear energy was banned.

I'm proud of this country, just as I am ashamed of my "native" country, the USA. At one time, the USA stood for all the same things New Zealand does, but America seems to have lost its way. It's really sad. I think the American PEOPLE are the same, but they've just grown numb to the petty intrigues and schemes their politicians are so fond of, to the point that they don't really CARE what their politicians do anymore. And that's a dangerous state of mind to be in, as evinced by the Bush administration's ability to behave however it likes without being responsible to the American people for its actions.

Let's not play that game. I was an army brat. My father, all my uncles, both grandfathers, and three cousins were (or still are) in the US army. They're all fucking morons who fit my description perfectly well. Not to mention all their army friends I've met who also fall into that 95%. Yes, it's stereotyping. Yes, it also happens to be mostly true.

don't try to compare USA and NZ. NZ has about 4.1 million people population..USA has about 110 million.

when you grow up a certain way, you see things that way. eg, there's other posts here about "do you believe in ghosts"? for people like me, i haven't seen one but my entire culture believes in ghosts and many people tell the stories. so for me to say, "there are no ghosts, and people who talk about ghosts are dumb" it goes against how i grew up.

growing up liberal or conservative, some people do make a change. others even change over time as we all know. of course, though, just like in national news, we tend to hear more liberals complaining about things, just like here on the boards.

NZ certainly has it's advantages. it's just not easy to say what works for a population of 4 million plus works for a population that is 2683% bigger.

Not to be rude, but please get your numbers correct, I'm not sure about the NZ population but the USA was well over 270 Million in 2000 I believe.

Ok , so you are the Redneck, Chewing tobacco stained asshat that you speak so fondly of but deny your original lineage and hide yourself in "The All-mightyness of what is New Zealand". That is one hell of a hypocritical statement, you claim to be what you resent the most but love a country that you claim to be yours that you moved to. That's like claiming Dub-ya is a Texan when he moved here when he was in his 30's after his daddy bought him a ranch.

I'm personally glad that you are not here to pollute the gene pool anymore than it already is, USA may not be the greatest country in the world but at least we try.
