lol, another good thread...

I myself happen to have a common noun for a type of building as a surname. Nicknames? Oh wow - dozens at least in elementary school alone.

Like KakarSmakar, my high school and college friends pretty much were required to have nicknames - and we didn't get offended by them at all (as you seem to have been Git). Some of them were Loadboy, Stickboy, Bubba, Beaner (no), Zipman/Zipdude/Zipgook (yes and his idea), Fishbone/Toddler, Burglar/Putz, Choad (me), Assman (before Seinfeld used it), Squeely, Misterrr, Der Fuhrer, etc. We always had a lot of fun, and everybody seemed to have several good nicknames at least.

Nobody ever let themself be bothered by it... one of our common expressions that we lifted (from Leary?) was 'you can call me ******* or ******** as long as you say it with a smile'. Names are just a way if getting somebody's attention after all.

As far as GW Bush goes - his constant nicknaming of people (using insulting ones to non-friend colleagues) just reflects on his personality... of a self-centered silver spoon jerk. That and all the coke and booze has left him a bit impaired - he's definitely a smart guy, but his party days have turned him into a tongue tied monkey who CANNOT speak worth ****. And this is a Minnesotan saying that - and we had to watch Jesse Ventura give horrible speeches for a full term. ^^

Bush is probably using nicknames because his brain is a bit stunted, and they are easier to use as a 'key' for remembering the person. Either that or he is just a disrespectful ******.

One small bit of trivia regarding nicknames.

Almost everybody in Thailand use nicknames.
I have four Thai workmates, and they all wanted to be called by their nicknames: A, Nu, Mam and Audi ^^.

(Having really long and hard to pronounce names helped)

I think the same might hold true for places like sri lanka too, where the average name is like 20+ letters long.

My real name is Richard, not Rick, Rich, Richey, Ricky or Ricardo and only D1ck if I properly managed to **** you off. I like my name, it is a name of strength, a name of kings, so whenever some asshat decides to assign me a nickname, whether out of spite, pure laziness or in an attempt to do the Alpha male deal with me, I tell them in no uncertain terms my feelings concerning the matter. It’s not a sign of affection, you don’t know me well enough and if you did you would know I despise nicknames, it’s a malicious and underhanded attempt to place me below you in the pecking order. Every time you call me by the nickname you are telling those around us you are the stronger and smarter male for having forced it upon me. I feel so strongly about this that I have made enemies out friends who insist on using these monikers.

That being said I cannot believe how callous and obvious Bush is about it:

Quote:
Sen. Ben Nelson finally has succeeded in getting President Bush to stop calling him by the nickname "Nellie."
Bush had been referring to the Nebraska Democrat as "Nellie" since 2001.
Nelson disliked the nickname and had asked the president to stop using it.
The president likes to give people nicknames. He has called Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, "Pootie-Poot," while aide Karen Hughes gets "High Prophet."
But Bush heeded Nelson's request to scrap his moniker, and at the recent White House Christmas party, the president referred to Nelson as "Benny."
"The president had a twinkle in his eye when he called me that," Nelson said. "He knew what he had done. I said, 'Thank you, Mr. President."'

Whatever, Ricardo. Smiley: rolleyes No self-respecting latina mother would name her child "Richard", unless it was preceded by "Juan Jesus" or something.

Whitey please. It's just more entertaining to think of you as Mexican, and a forum tradition. What the hell are we supposed to do now? Tease you about your portfolio and your inability to tan without burning?

Well...you guys are LUCKY to have the HONOR of getting a nick name.

I, on the other hand, HATE my name...and I know the second I mention it here, I won't here the end of it......

...but it's fun, and I like the witty retorts, so here goes...

My name is ELVIS.

...yes....ELVIS. He lives and posts in the Assylum.

You heard it here first. -.-;;

I hate my name. I don't know what type of crack my mom was smoking on that last push...urg. What the HELL was she thinking?

I accept all forms of nick names...though, it's hard to even THINK of a nickname out of Elvis...at least, any nick name that I won't kill you for.

"King" will get you killed....quick. ><

My best friend calls me "El" sometimes...but usually just says whole name...everyone else don't really even try to name me something else.

Actually...my girl friend's mom calls me "Pancho" like the true latin woman that she is...specially since I have no idea how the heck did I get dubbed that, anyway...but it's a HELL of alot better than Elvis.

Yay for nick names!

at least your name/nickname isn't a verb.

<<<< "Rob"

of course, of the 5 general forms of this (Robert, Bob, Bobby, Robby, and Rob), i feel this is the least offensive. If you're not in the mafia, bobby doesn't work past age 5.

My sympathies - that is cruel and unusual unless you're his ******* love child - then it's appropriate. :P

Only good nickname I can think of would be:
-Tenacious E

Oh by the way - for fun and hijinx, you could have a friend follow you and whenever you leave a mall or store, etc - you could have him announce loudly 'Elvis has left the building'.

I could understand where you are coming from Richard if you there was something unique about your name, but i am sorry to tell you that there isn't, there are millions of Richard's out there and you are just one of them, i wager they don't get all cut when someone decides to give them a nick name.

Oh good work, your name means a bunch of nice stuff in another language. Obviously that means you are all of these things and that your parents didn't just decide to pick the name at random because it is such a common one. Seriously, your name doesn't even mean that much. Mine means He who is like God, do you hear us Michael's bragging or complaining when someone calls us Mike or some other variation? No, you don't. Stfu.

To the OP

I had a friend in High School named Richard, you were lucky with your nicknames

His ranged from ****, to TrickyDick, to Rich, Head

My personal Favorite for him was Head

That one stuck with him for like 3 years till he graduated.

My real name is Mark and you cannot shorten that much.
For some reason my friends keep calling me Marùk (prenounce the ù like the u from 'urggg' when you are dying), and when I'm standing far away: "MARÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙK!!!". Don't ask me why, I'll prolly never know myself. -_-
