McDonald's to start offering gourmet coffee

USA Today said the world's largest fast food company is set to test and then offer premium java at all of its 13,000 restaurants either later this year or early 2006.

No further details, such as the coffee brand, the price, or an exact roll-out date, were available.

The move is seen as an attempt to capture a share of the $8.9 billion speciality coffee market after the number of adults drinking coffee has nearly doubled in the last four years. Analysts said it could boost the company's sales by 2 percent a year as coffee is the main attraction to a breakfast menu.

Maybe Stok can start selling egg and sausage sandwiches

I think all of it is a desperate attempt to recover from that "Biggie Size" movie. It'll take a lot of work, I stopped eating at Mickey D's about a dozen years ago. It'd take alot to get me to eat there again.

But yeah, better coffee is a start.

I was recently in Australia and almost every McDonalds had a "McCafe" in it. They had all sorts of fancy coffees and muffins and cakes and stuff. It was quite nice not having to eat a burger and having the choice to opt for a blueberry muffin instead. Considering McDonalds is basically the only fast food place there, they were quite smart in doing it.

I worked a stint in fast food and, while I didn't come away with many "OMG I'll never eat there!" memories, the McRib is one thing I won't touch with a long pointed stick.

I was impressed that McD's uses real eggs though. Actually had to crack the shells and pour them into the molds to make the various McMuffin products.

I remember the Arch Deluxe. It wasn't anything special, except for a different blend of spices, and a split-top bun. Oh boy they went all the way there!
The McRib, too, was a popular one; wasn't too bad either.

I don't know about "liquid", I assume it's just chipped pork pressed into form.

Anyway, my main memory of them is watching them ferment in a small vat of neon orange BBQ sauce for the afternoon, especially on slow sales days when they'd sit there all day. I imagine that from a dietary standpoint they're no worse for you than a Quarter Pounder is but pulling them out of the orange goo like some alchemy experiement gone wrong was enough to put me off them for good.

Y'know, now that you mention it, the McRib did seem to glow out of the bun. I wonder what it looks like under a black light. Speaking of Vats and Food, anyone ever see those poor guys working at Hot Dog on a Stick pumping the vat full of lemonade? I'll never touch that stuff, and I feel bad for those zit faced teenagers wearing that ridiculous outfit while churning the nade. You know, what's equally kinda gross to think about is how some wine is made by a bunch of farmers stomping grapes while barefoot. If it ferments and becomes alcoholic does that mean it sterilizes itself?

Nah. Honestly, the only redeeming feature for McDonalds ever has been their breakfast menu. While not amazing, it's always been a pretty decent breakfast for a pretty decent price. The Egg McMuffin is almost the only thing that's actually "good" at McDonalds. Their Big Breakfast isn't bad at all. Admittedly, it's hard to ***** up scrambled eggs, hash browns, and sasauge, but it's something at least.

The rest of their food I'll take a pass on every time. Annoyingly, McDonalds is practically the only fast food place that's "close" to where I live. In fact, there are *three* of them in reasonable proximity to where I work, where I live, and along the route in-between, but I *never* stop there. I'll literally go several miles out of my way to get food at anywhere else. Their burgers are just that bad IMO...

I'll agree with you there.

If McDonalds served breakfast all day long, I'd eat there a lot more often. I never get there before 10:30am though. As it is, I only eat at McDonalds as a last resort. Subway, Wendy's, BK, even Taco Bell come first.
