so I read awhile back about someone suckey encounter with the dentist (Jophiel?). anyway my girl friend told me that she still has numbness in her lower jaw, 3 teeth, and some of her lip. I wouldn't have worried save for the fact that it's been about week or so since the ordeal (wisdom teeth pulled).

I read that it has happened in a bunch of people and it goes away in about 1-3 months. but to some people, although very rare it can be permeant. I’m betting she'll be fine but talk about bad dentist days..

side note: if it is really screwed up can the dentist/oral surgeon be held liable? or do we wave those rights before we go in? I never had any teeth taken out so I have no insight.

Don't rub coke on your gums, the numbness usually goes away shortly after that.

It's called a dry socket, and generally its your own fault if you get them. They are caused by drinking from straws or smoking. Nothing to do with the dentist. If you try suing him his lawyer will just say GFY.

The phenonemon you are describing is not dry socket. Dry socket is an infection in the empty socket which causes excruciating pain and foul breath.

Unfortunately your GF has experienced some nerve damage. The wisdom teeth are extremely close to one of the nerves that supplies the teeth, gum and lip. If the extraction was difficult that nerve can be traumatized or cut completely leading the numb teeth, lip. THis may or may not return.

I don't know about the suing. It isn't really a mistake; rather it is a known complication and generally it is included in the informed consent you sign before you go in.

Good luck, though. That'd suck.

Yeah, I've had an extraction or two and, each time, they have you sign away your rights if the nerve gets damaged.

For the record, I'm quite fond of my dentist -- it's the dental work itself that I could live without.

If you had teeth it would make more sense.

Just figured I'd post a little experience of mine with the dentist.

In September, I had my lower wisdom teeth removed, he didnt put in any stitches, just yanked em out and gauzed them up. I went through the normal stuff for 2-3 days, the pain, drinking soup and ensures and not doing much. It didnt get any better, woke up one night cause I was chewing on something; I sure as hell know I didnt go to sleep with food or gum in my mouth. Found out it was blood clots, I was bleeding like a stuck pig from the gums.

Went to work doing light duty and within 2 hours I had 2 16oz cups full of blood and saliva, Said GFY to my boss and went to ER, two trips later and 8k in debt the oral surgeon on duty finally got my gums repaired. The insurance decided it was a dental procedure so they did not cover it. Hmm im bleeding to death out of my mouth with oral hemmorages and suddenly it becomes a dental problem. /sigh (exaggeration slightly)

They finally got that straightened out and only owe 800 bucks but I was pissed off.

My brother can not have his wisdom teeth pulled because the root has wraped itself around the nerve that services the lower right side of his jaw. He has looked into surgery, but the doctors say that they may still cut the nerve. It sucks because that tooth is growing in sideways.

I've had 4 baby teeth pulled, all on the top of my mouth. Safe to say not my most pleasant experience, but I liked the happy gas. =P

Tell her to apply Rootin Tootin Two Ball Tonic to it daily. It's good for everything, colds, molds, sore assholes, and anything else that be illin ya.

Yes, I'm shameless, anything for a daily blow-job.

You were supposed to give your girlfriend the tonic, not take some from Kakar.

But I'm sure he appreciates it.
