Ok, first off, that guy would have to have one hell of a good aim. Secondly, wtf?

Hello police state! At least he'll be getting a trial, unlike half the other people arrested under the patriot act.

Yeah and they wont let me ring someones doorbell and run off leaving a pumpkin with a knife stuck in its head with a note saying "you" on it.

What is the world coming to?

As I recall from previous stories, the man was caught because he was stupid enough to point the laser at a Port Authority helicopter that was looking for him after he supposively hit a plane with it.

Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to point a laser at a plane these days even as a joke? Especially with the recent news stories about it, doing it is about as funny or intelligent as saying "No, nothing to declare... except my bomb!" in the Custom gate. Then the dork tried to pin it on his daughter and cracked under polygraph.

Anyone who has a laser pointer and isnt either a) using it while attached to a gun or b)doing a presentation/lecture needs to be thrown in jail in the first place.

Kudos to US law enforcement in what is hopefully a string of laser related crackdowns.

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) -- A man who initially claimed his daughter aimed a laser at a helicopter was charged after he told federal agents that he pointed the light beam at two aircraft, authorities said Tuesday.

David Banach of Parsippany faces charges of interfering with the operator of a mass transportation vehicle and making false statements to the FBI. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court on Tuesday afternoon.

The aircraft were targeted by the lasers near Teterboro Airport.

On Wednesday night, a pilot preparing to land a chartered jet with 13 people aboard reported seeing three green laser beams about 11 miles from the airport.

On Friday, a helicopter carrying Port Authority detectives was hit by a beam as they surveyed the area in an attempt to pinpoint the origin of the original beams.

[...]

According to court papers, under questioning Banach admitted lying and said he shined a laser beam at both the jet and the helicopter. He has not been charged in the helicopter incident.

Huh. What kind of laser beam is powerful enough to be visible from an altitude which a plane is flying at? The man must have been shining the beam at the plane on its landing approach. It did say 11 miles away from the airport, ok. The second thing you need for a visible laser beam is vapor of some sort. So was it cloudy? And lastly, the man must have had damn good aim. I blame that on hacks. ^^

Edit: Where did this man get a laser anyways?? The engines for lasers of even small magnitude are at least the size of your home PC. I think.

I beg to differ. Using a laser to drive cats insane is truly a noble cause.

One has to wonder what would motivate a middle-aged father to shine laserbeams at aircraft.

Although, if you look at his photo, given the arrangement of his hair, he may have removed his tin foil hat for the photo-op.

The guy was a ffiber optics tecnician, using a class III (or it might be a low II) green laser used to test for holes in fiber optics. It is specifically designed for A. field use (battery pack supplemented by car charger/wall unit), and B. to be quite powerful. Just in case anyone was curious.

WHAT?! No execution?

BTW: I'm still waiting for the boy getting in jail for making a gun with his hands and saying "Pow pow pow" in an airplane.
