I do have to say that for the first time really in a couple decades, they have a team mentality that's solid. They're not relying on big plays or luck to win games, but are actually playing good football. What SD usually does is grab a couple "star" players, focus everything on them, get a nice win streak at the beginning of the season, but then once everyone watches the films and learns who the threats are manage to fail miserably for the second half. This is the first year in a long time where that hasn't been the case. There are actually solid players in all positions, with both rookies and veterans filling those slots. They've done a good job at getting veterans in mentoring positions for rookies instead of playing them off against eachother ("star" rookie takes veterans slot, veteran signs as free agent and goes to the superbowl with another team... Seen that one like 50 times). That change in approach has been huge this year, and if they continue it will make them a competitor in seasons to come
As much as it pains me to say this (KC fan here), this is largely due to the influence/coaching of Marty Schottenheimer. While coaching KC from 92-99 the Chiefs' worst season was 9-7 and he only missed the playoffs once. His teams were balanced, based around a strong running game, strong defense and capable passing game that didn't make too many mistakes.
However, his shortcomings always came in the playoffs, as the farthest he ever made it with the Chiefs was to the AFC championship game in 1993/94 with Joe Montana. Surprisingly, I find myself hoping he does win the Superbowl this year, because I think his playoff losses owe more to bad luck and bad games than they do to his coaching ability.
My prediction:
AFC: San Diego 27
Indianapolis 42
NFC: Philadelphia 15
Carolina 9 (yes...this is my actual prediction)
Superbowl: Who cares?
