New Zealand's Parliament is voting right now on a bill that would allow civil unions for same-sex couples. The bill passed the first reading a while back and it passed the second reading last week. Yesterday, Parliament voted down an attempt to turn it into a public referendum (which was the bill's opponents' only real hope for knocking it down), and today they're voting on the final reading of it. New Zealand's definition of civil union is identical to their definition of marriage, except that civil union partners are forbidden from using the terms "husband", "wife" or "spouse". If it passes (which it's expected to by a margin of about 8 votes), Max and I could get "civil-unionised" by May, which will go a long way towards helping me stay in New Zealand. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of such shows as Will & Grace and ***** Eye for the Straight Guy, they don't just love us... they think we're witty, funny and the height of fashion. Which of course we are. =D

I'll let you guys know how it goes this afternoon when Parliament announces their vote.

I spent a year in Australia while I was in the military and they are quite a bit more receptive to homosexuality there than in the US. Even now, that pop culture has made it "In" down there it just seems like a different attitude for it. It's neither "in" nor "out" it's just there.

I never did get over to New Zealand though, I wish I had. But I spent all my spare cash on scuba divin, booze, and strippers.

Good luck Sabo! And if the bill does get passed, you and Max planning a wedding or is it just a quick run down to the justice of the peace/courthouse to get hitched?

Well, Sabo, I thought from the title you had received your George Michael fan club kit, but close enough.

As to Aceofwilds,

If you can't take a bit of inappropriate humor, there is an OOT forum on this site. Fuck off and post there if this offends you. So far, what I have seen of your posting leads me to believe you belong there. Who cares what a fucking shuttlecock reminds you of?

Why can't we do that in this country?

Im fairly sure that civil unions would be accepted here in the States if the judges in Mass hadn't effed it up. Now everyones picking up a cross and praying the gay people go away.

I think it's a cinch that it'll pass. Besides, the pros have bigger signs than the antis, for the most part.

Congratulations.

I wish the US would have allowed this to happen. My state was one of the first to change the laws to allow same-sex marriages and then we recently passed a law only recognizing heterosexual marriages.
