Refer to: The Peoples of Middle-earth (The History of Middle-earth Vol. 12): XIII Last Writings. The Glorfindel character of Rivendell was not conceived as the same guy as Gondolin. Tolkien said :
Quote:
"Its use [i.e. the name 'Glorfindel'] in The Lord of the Rings is one of the cases of the somewhat random use of the names found in the older legends ... which escaped reconsideration in the final published form...".

Here is a timeline link of Glorfindel if you want to look... it references his death, also the SILM references him as dead as well although the book says he is just LOST... which can be interpreted as dead...

I read the LotR awhile back, but I couldn't remember whether Faramir threatened Frodo and attempted to take the ring like the film says. Help me out here.

I've always been under the impression that Glorfindel is indeed one Elf, both dying in the Fall of Gondolin and in Rivendell, as one of the several characters who are returned from death.

And why do you mention a Balrog in Helm's Deep? That wasn't in the book, nor were any elves except for Legolas. Or are you just making comparisons based on the editing of book to movie with regards to Arwen?

HXCHillary, in the Book, Faramir is suspicious of Frodo, threatens Frodo, and considers keeping Frodo a prisoner UNTIL he knows WHAT Frodo is carrying, and then almost immediately lets Frodo go.

In the Movie, Faramir KNOWS that Frodo has the ring -- and decides to take Frodo to Ecthelion -- and then to the Steward.

Yeah, I was fairly certain that Faramir had let Frodo go, unlike what the film showed.

Debalic,

It is in the books, reference it and you will see his epic battle!

And actually there were elves mentioned, just not the same elves marching to the defense of Helms Deep as portrayed in the movie.. and in general, yes we are referencing book to movie sorta lol!

I can't recall a balrog in Helm's Deep in the book either. As for Glorfindel being an elf, yes he is, and yes he may have been on the the few characters to return from death. That may be one explaination as to two of them.

Glorfindel was not at Helms deep but cronologiaclly he was in a battle with the Balrog at the time.

I believe it was about 300 mile north of the Pass of Isenguard.

He was on a mission from Elrond to ask Prince Ithian <the Prince of Del Ameroth> to assist in the fight in Minas Tirith.

Dol Amroth.

I don't recall that per se, but my recollection is rather spotty, of course. I do need to read it all again. It's been over a year.

My guess being, the time would be sooner rather than later. Peter wants Ian as Gandalf more than anything, and Ian isn't getting any younger.

Also take into account that this movie is a sure-fire blockbuster, and there is no way New Line sits on this golden egg for too long.
