My new weight loss plan

Weight-loss experts have a novel prescription for people who want to shed pounds: Get some sleep.

A very large study has found a surprisingly strong link between the amount of shut-eye people get and their risk of becoming obese.

Those who got less than four hours of sleep a night were 73 percent more likely to be obese than those who got the recommended seven to nine hours of rest, scientists discovered. Those who averaged five hours of sleep had 50 percent greater risk, and those who got six hours had 23 percent more.

Have fun exercising, Smash!

Meh. I can't see how that can work. If I don't sleep more than 6 hours a night, I'm too freakin' tired to eat.

It could have to do with eating habits as well as work habits. People who get into working 40 hours on a weekend probably aren't going to be eating real food and would probably get into downing coffee and junk food a lot. Large amounts of junk food could also mess with some people and cause their sleep to be poor.

Lol well I weigh 105 and I'm 5 ft 4 1/2. Last night I slept about 11 hrs. I'd have to say there is a correlation...

I saw a special on this subject a few nights ago. That and 8 year olds receiving gastric bypass surgery. ack!

Anyways how the story unfolded as Joph stated, people who get less than five hours sleep were more prone to obecity than others.

When you have a sleep debt your body tries to compensate for the lost energy by eating or smoking or whatever.

I could have told you that without a study. It's why a key component of my weight loss plan is drinking myslef into a comma each night guranteeing me the right amount of rest and the occasional urine soaked bedsheet!

Drinking yourself to sleep could be fairly bad due to alcohol decreasing the amount of REM sleep you will get.

Alcohol won't necessarily disrupt REM sleep, though other drugs sometimes do (namely marijuana).

Well, waking up every half hour to pee is very disruptive to the sleep cycle, but as Smash mentioned, enough booze will bypass the whole "waking up" component to peeing.

Doesn't seem like drinking that much would ever be a good plan and I'd hate to hear of Smash dealing with cirrhosis.

Pfft. I have enough wealth to just buy a new liver on the black market and have some shady Canadian install it for me!
