Marijuana- Should it be Illegal?Follow

#277 Jan 13 2006 at 4:34 PM Rating: Decent
This thread reminds me of that time I hid my stash and didn't find it till more than a year later. I was pretty dissappointed in myself for smoking it, like you should be for posting it.

Man, I seem to have a lot to say on this, lol.

Only got a chance to skim the thread so far, so sorry if I'm repeating.

Serious thoughts on MJ as a "gateway drug"

The reason weed is seen as a gateway drug while alcohol, cigs, are not lies in the fact that it is always lumped in with "hard drugs": to some folks, drinking a brew is fine, even a matter of good social manners, but having a toke is the same as shooting up with junkies in a back alley. Your typical gov't stance perpetuates this conception; then, Little Johnny/Julie smokes up with his/her friends, and seeing FEW NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES from a little bud, assumes the whole "Just Say No" thing is a complete sham, and is less reluctant to trust in warnings to stay away from the harder stuff.

I am undecided on legalization, but I do belive that at the very least the government should take some responsibility in providing us with the truth about the actual effects and consequences of various substances as opposed to labeling them all as "Poison" due to ideological reasons. When people know the facts, they are less likely to make stupid decisions.

All that aside, just like with EQ, moderation is the key word with MJ: in both cases it makes it more enjoyable and gives it greater meaning.

In the US weed is prohibited for one main reason:

.IF <X=LARGER> THEN <Y=SMALLER>
.GOTO SUBROUTINE "pissed off weapon industry"
.GOTO SUBROUTINE "powerleak"
.RETURN

X = people smoking weed
Y = people buying guns

On a more serious note:
One should find a balance between protecting people against theirselves and letting them free to make their own choice.

So its wise to make the treshhold high but extreme fines as you have in the States are blown out of proportion.
High fines are powerless measures because of fear and incompetence to deal with "the problem" in another more effictive way.

Im from the Netherlands and we have problems with this item still in spite it being "half-legit" here. So making it legit doesnt solve the problem either. If there is any problem?

There is usage and abuse of substances. Depends on people what they do, not rules.
