Tolkien had a special interest in European mythology, specifically Norse/Scandanavian. He did a lot of translating of works in those languages. Part of his vision for his Middle-Earth was to create a purely British mythology, since other than Welsh/Celtic lore there wasn't much.

That's 'cuz British as we know it is a mix of Roman and German and Celtic people... fairly fresh by way of Cultures.

It's like the U.S. having a mythology.

for the record, I love Tolkien...he's like a prophet and stuff

The Fellowship Extended DvD has alot of interesting special features dealing with how Tolkien came up with his ideas for the books. You might look into borrowing/renting it if you're interested... I think the dvd has about 2 hours of specials on how/why he wrote, so its more than worthwhile if you're looking for information.

And Debalic is right, Tolkien was upset with the lack of truly British mythology, so he decided to construct his own by pulling ideas from many other cultures.
