Most of you will allready be aware of this, but for those who aren't, some reading on a famous psychology experiment about just how mindless and sheeplike people really are in the face of authority:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

It's worth reading and then bringing up in your high school history class when talking about WW2. You can say "If Hitler was in the US we'd have killed Jews too." and then use it to support your argument and annoy your teachers.

I don't think it was about being sheep to authority.

It was more about getting that sweet moola.

I wonder if there are people that actually think that people as a whole are willing to stand up for what they think is right at the time they're able to. Seems like I've heard of this experiment at least every year for last few years for some reason.

But I'm kinda guessing the reason people are willing to go through experiences much like in this miligram experiment is due to how they're talked down to making the "teacher" from the experiment seem like a person in power, and people have the basic instinct to believe that those in power must have good reasoning power due to being in power. Kinda exemplified by some people acting offended if you say something bad about Bush or question the thoughts being taught in a highschool class(like questionable facts about certain things in a history class like how bad were some people considering their actual positions in the world at the time), or how you may not really question what your given as a prescription by a doctor who may simply be prescribing something he's getting kickbacks for or something rather than prescribing something that could be of more help.

Also sheep are much nicer than many of the people who are described as sheeplike so please don't use that phrase "sheeplike" because it really seems like a putdown on sheep as a whole.

No most people think that they would stand up for they believe, when in reality, you, I, and nearly everyone else wouldn't. No matter how much we think we're diffrent than the unwashed masses.

Gee, I wonder why that would be...

The Milgram experiments were interesting for a lot of reasons. The subjects, both sets, were led to their respective actions gradually. Giving people time to adjust to lower and lower standards (of living, of behavior, of leadership) is an old but effective tactic. The analogy you hear is that of turning up the heat gradually.

It is very, very difficult to stand up to someone in authority, particularly with peers around, and say "No". It's easier, of course, if you're prepared. In the real world, no one is.

I guess when I say people like to think that people as a whole won't stand for that kind of crap I mean humans have that basic thought process that if THEY were in that position they'd have taken action.

Couldn't be more the opposite.

People will litterally rip other people limb from limb if they are in a cowd of people who seem to think it's the right thing to do.

/high five

I have my own set of convictions I live by. If I happen to take a stance like any majority it is because I have come to my own conclusions on the subject. Unlike most people I have met, I actually do things for a reason and purpose.

Not to belabor the point, but that's what everyone says and then they fall right into line and push the button.

Not me! I'm actually a conservative southern baptist with ties to the white supremacy movement. But I'm deathly afraid of flames, so instead I keep it all a secret.

Oops.

I have a litmus test for things I undertake Smash. if it has no reason or purpose then I don't do it. I'd take one look at a man shouting like a meth addict (which Hitler was btw) and group him in with the fundie nuts and pro-socialists.

I dont like Bush or Kerry and have no convictions that either one would make a good leader of the Executive Branch. What percent of Americans are undecided?

I wonder what percent of that percent actually hold the conviction they both suck?

Not me, pickle. I'm a craven, pathetic, mewling syncopant who has determined that my best course of action is to see which way the wind is blowing and be the fifth or six person to jump on any given bandwagon. It's safer that way.

What I'm tying to say is that if you can find four other people willing to follow you to the death, I've got your back.

I had to watch the videos for the Milgram Experiment for an Intro Sociology course, I am a bad person because I laughed out loud when the actor pretending to be electrocuted started screaming.

It was extremely interesting to watch though. Smash do you know the name of the experiment where they had the "guards" and "prisoners" and they had to cancel it before it was over?
