Ivan "Chip" Frederick

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A military judge jailed a U.S. army sergeant, described in court as a typical all-American boy, for eight years on Thursday for sexually and physically abusing Iraqi prisoners.

The sentence for Staff Sergeant Ivan "Chip" Frederick, 38, is by far the toughest of those handed down to three soldiers now convicted over abuses at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison.

Photos of naked prisoners being taunted and humiliated at the jail outraged the world when they were published in April.

Frederick, who sat impassively through the two-day court martial at a U.S. base in Baghdad, appeared shaken and looked at the floor after judge Colonel James Pohl announced his verdict, which included a dishonorable discharge and a demotion.

Well, that's that then. Justice for all.

Wow - 8 years! And didn't that guy make a plea bargain in return for testimony against the others involved?

Zoiks.

i remember sitting up till midnight watching BBC nes 24 a night when a US marine went ape **** and tried to hand grenade his CO, he got shot in the leg pretty much straight away and they filmed him sitting on his *** on the sand bleeding profusely with no medical attention while 20 or so marines surrounded him at gunpoint in case he got up and made a run for it, the guy couldn't even lift his head. this was around a week after four yanquis were on al-jazeera bandaged and bruised and held at iraqi republican gaurd gunpoint, i remember outraged authorities that the iraqis had broken the geneva convention acts by filming them, i saw no outrage at the bleeding guy being filmed, i saw no outrage at the guantanamo prisoners being held without trial, but i'm sure if those cases ever get to court then some average squadie will catch the blame and svae rumsfelds beer gut once more

Nah, that's crazy, try a leader for the war crimes of his troops? That's silly. That would be like blaming Saddam because some of his troops gassed Kurds.

There was, quite a lot of outrage actually. Some of them have gotten to trial. A hundred or so have been released.

Just sayin.

And some of those ended up being killed in 'skirmishes' later. All is well that ends well.

Some of them ended up killing American troops after being wrongly imprisoned.

What goes round comes around.

Wait, this was a dumb cliche contest, right?

Big difference:
Saddam said Gas the kurds.
Rumsfeld probably didn't say take naked pictures of the towel head.

In fact you have absolutely no idea if either is the case.

Just reposting something that I posted back in August:

Okay so i was reading article on court case going on against MP who was involved in abuse/torture in Abu Ghraib.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/08/23/abughraib.germany/index.html

The defense insists the failed motion is not a blow, but their main argument is Graner and the other reservist military police were just following orders, even if Graner himself appeared to be enjoying himself.

"I think some of the smiles and the thumbs-up and some of the other things in these pictures really were the direct result of orders to look as though you're intimidating," said Guy Womack, Graner's civilian attorney.

Smiling and thumbs sure are intimidating. Im sure the conversation went a little like this.

Military Higher Up: Garner we want you to torture prisoners of war.
Graner: But that would be wrong sir and its against international law and everything America stands for morally and ethically
Military Higher Up: I dont care an order is an order! Follow it or be court martialed.
Graner:well if it is an order sir...
Military Higher Up:Okay what i want you to do is take pictures of them naked.
Graner:Naked?
Military Higher Up:Yeah... naked but in piles. One stacked on top of another.
Graner:Piles?
Military Higher Up: Yeah then perform sex acts in front of them and do a myriad of other things to degrade and humiliate them.
Graner:But sir?
Military Higher Up: Thats an order son, ....you dont want to go to jail for disobeying an order do you?
Graner:No sir!! Consider it done Sir!!
Military Higher Up:Your a good soldier Garner.... just one last thing... i want pictures... lots of em... and you better be smiling....
