(Romulus-AP, October 21, 2004, 9:43 a.m.) A cargo plane from Chicago landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport early Thursday after losing an engine somewhere over Michigan.

Federal Aviation Administration officials in Chicago say a Kalitta Air LLC jet took off from O'Hare International Airport late Wednesday. It was bound for New York's Kennedy International Airport when it reported mechanical problems with one of its engines.

The Boeing 741-R was diverted to Detroit Metro in Romulus, where it landed without incident. No one was injured.

After the landing, officials discovered the engine was missing.

FAA officials say Michigan authorities are searching for the engine. The FAA will investigate, with results expected to take weeks.

Kalitta is based in Ypsilanti and offers worldwide air freight service.

WHOOPS guess someone forgot to make sure the engine bolts were tightened during pre-flight.

Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

I'm guessing airframe stress fatigue, something which can't be seen without X-rays or scrubbing the paint off down to the aluminum. Doesn't make it any better, but doesn't make it a dumba$$ airline company either. Component failure is a fact of life in aviation due to high stress loads, high frequency vibrations for lengthy periods of time, rapid and constant temperature fluctuations, and possible human error compounded by suspect maintenance procedures and cost cutting measures.

Welcome to my world. Just be glad it wasn't your house's roof it went through after it fell off...

I remember when a plane lost an engine around 10 years ago... Dropped into the pond 200 feet or so away from my house.
