Terragen

Anyone use it? It's a "scenery generator" (their words) where you can create photo-realistic landscapes with pretty minimal effort. Of course, you can also put in a lot of effort and then really create something dazzling.

I used it years ago and have been cycling through my old images as desktop wallpaper on my work computer. Decided I need something new and got me thinking about it and thought I'd ask here. Anyway, give it a shot.. it's easy to use and you can get something pretty neat looking just using the random features and the preset terrains.

Unfortunately, my old computer at the time was so slow that I generated most of my images in 480x640 and medium resolution. Looking back on them now, I wish I had done them in high resolution but even at the resolution I used it took over an hour to generate an image. On my P4 with my crappy (by today's standards) GeForce4 MX card, it takes about three minutes to do what I used to leave my old K6-2 500MHz on overnight for.

My old gallery

Again, I should have used much better settings for more realism but some of them came out pretty nice despite myself Smiley: wink

EDIT: things like stars, golf balls, etc were added in via Paintshop Pro. Anything else was generated by Terragen. And yeah I know a couple thumbnails are broken.. I'm not about to fix 'em from work.

huh. those are cool! i'm going to have to play with that. Most of my 3d stuff is either airplanes of various types in autocad, or a few things in PovRay. Lots of Autocad because I was working with NasterCam at the time. I miss my milling machine!

I've got Bryce on my computer at home, which does 3D stuff also. Only I suck at it, lol.

Yeah, I've never used Bryce but back when I was more into Terragen and reading more about it, the idea seemed to be that Terragen was better at some stuff, Bryce better at other and that smart people would post-production edit images from one with elements of the other instead of arguing about it Smiley: wink

Terragen does have the advantage of being free and, as I said, very easy to get started on.

Ditto on Bryce... I personally have always liked it more than Terragen, but Bryce is a bit pricey. However it did work perfectly with poser (a character design studio) so a lot of my old 3d animations were made with a combination of the two.

Tried terragen a while back. I'm still on a POS machine so I didn't really get too much accomplished. Anyway, heres a cool site I have been visiting for wallpapers, I think most of the artists use Bryce or Terra.

Click on the Users gallery, which is free. Cool stuff!

Just found this thread today, thought I'd share a bit. I've been using Terragen for a couple of years, and while I'm certainly no master, the fact that I can do anything with it proves it's ease of use.

Here's a few examples:

Enjoy, and share the Terragen love. ;)

Well since it's already brought back from the dead, here's my not so wanted contribution to it.

I use Terragen quite abit for basic landscaping. However, when I want to go all out, I use Vue d'esprit (love it alongside Poser). In some cases I will also use Bryce.
