Got a cite for this or are you just making stuff up based off of what you saw on Ally McBeal?

I'm not arguing full sentances being served, I want to see where most life sentances are served in five to ten years.

Why does everyone get so upset about death penalty?

If someone raped, tortured and killed your baby daughter. Would you be satisfied with knowing that he's in jail for the next 500 years where he'll recieve full health care, education and luxurious benefits?

I would ******* hunt the ******* down and let him know how much pain the human body can withstand before dying from it.

ok, so i see that your morals are overpowered by the hint of turmoil, but since you don't write laws, i don't think that "fucking hunting bastards down" will be legalised any time soon

If I knew 100% without a doubt that someone was guilty, I'd have no issue with the death penalty.

I think that recent events in the last few years have shown that people are being sent to death row without 100%-without-a-doubt guilt being proven.

No, you misread the article. What you quoted was an argument against the death penalty, not for it. Your reading comprehension garnered you those replys
Right. And I disagree with that quote.

I'd push for having these youthful offenders place-kicked in the jimmy. That would have the benefits of putting he kid in a coma for two weeks, and hopefully sterilizing him. It would work for girls, too: imagine pulling a football cleat out of a pubescent ******. Smiley: eek

*Shrug* I'd find other things to be worried about, but that's your problem Smiley: wink

If someone was guilty of cold blooded murder or the like, I see no reason not to have them executed. However, the legal system simply isn't good enough at establishing guilt for me to agree with the death penalty as a whole. If there's a risk that a single innocent will die, I'd rather the murderers get life than kill that innocent.

The only thing wrong with the death penalty is the fact that they don't televise it.

Some people get their rocks off on things like that.

Yeah, that whole 'beyond a reasonable doubt' thing is pretty flexible.

No matter what we do, there are always going to be people who are wrongly accused and punished. That's just a fact that there is no way around. As a society, we need to get over it, and go about executions in a humane and expeditious manner.

One part of me says "Eye for and Eye" ect... rid the planet of any ******* degenerate lowlife scumbag criminal ******* that is going to endanger me and my family.

Another part of me says that it is NOT the place of MAN to decide who he has the right to kill.. and to think that we can exact judgement on other people.

like Gandalf said:
We can't Give Life, why should we think that we can Take Life?

it is the temptation of vengeance and power that makes us the way we are and so ready to deal out death and judgement.

What is justice but a balancing of the scales? What do you think would be just punishment for a cold blooded murderer/rapist since you believe death goes too far? Would you lock someone away in a small cell to waste their life away and feel smug that you're a good person to not kill them but let them rot away instead?

If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death. Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution-life for life. If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so he is to be injured. Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death. You are to have the same law for the alien and the native-born. I am the LORD your God. -- Leviticus 20:17-22

If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise -- Exodus 20:21-25

If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse a man of a crime, the two men involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the LORD before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time. The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you. The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot -- Deuteronomy 19:16-21

The only other reference is when Jesus brings it up during the Sermon on the Mount, where he is referencing the previously quoted passages.

You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. -- Matthew 5:38-39

Sorry man... there's not a single passage from the Law that says not to execute a murderer. And Jesus was referencing the Law when he says "you have heard..." Actually, anyone who says it is referencing the Judaic Law.

Edit: I mean anyone who says it in reference to scripture is talking about the Law. I know the "eye for an eye" bit isn't confined to the Judaic scripture and Law

Not if you're Jewish, no.

I wasn't trying to use scripture to validate capital punishment. I was disputing Dracoid saying that "eye for an eye", as scripture, was being misinterpreted. I think I've shown that each time God lays down the "eye for an eye" routine, he's condoning capital punishment. Whether or not you think scripture is a worthwhile argument in the debate isn't relevant. Personally, I don't think it is but that doesn't change Dracoid being wrong.

Anyway, Dracoid, you still have yet to answer. What would be just punishment for a guilty cold-blooded murderer?

The emotional consequence of being victimized is exactly why justice is left to the courts. No one would be objective about anyone who has harmed them or their family.

How often do people fixate on the first person brought in for questioning and demand "justice" before guilt is even established? How many capital cases are tried in the press before they ever reach the court room?

I thought the courts were just a liberal method of handing out taxpayer's money for inefficent service.

We should privatize justice and do away with the government funded court system. The American people would be empowered to deal with these things themselves as they always know best.
