Must be a bit creepy to read your own obit.
Dave Swarbrick (Long time fiddle-player with 'Fairport Convention') was seriously in Hospital a few years ago, but The Daily Telegraph jumped the gun and published his obituary.

He made a full recovery, and now sells autographed obituaries to raise money for the hospital that saved him.

Like Richard Thompson much, Nobster?

But of course. Not made the Cropredy pilgrimage for a few years now but used to go see him (and him and Linda) whenever I could.

Lost count of the Fairport gigs now, but always mighty craic and good banter in the bar afterwards.

Richard and Linda's cover of "The Dark End of the Street" blows me away every time I hear it.

Nob, what's up with your musical background? You've alluded to being a session player...?

Bah. Sad memories.

I got lucky in the mid-70s and made some nice dough freelancing and doing stuff for CBS. Was originally an orchestral percussionist but got bitten by Jazz then Punk then anything going.

Went to University and apart from a few dollar-***** sessions to pay rent, I had to give it up.

As far as name-dropping goes:

When Phil Collins stole Chester Thompson from Weather Report, I did a few sessions for pre-tour rehearsals with Weather Report (Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, the mighty Jaco Pastorius, Alphonso Johnson, Alejandro Acuna.) A humbling experience.

I did stand-ins for gigs by The Ramones (Tommy had a nostril problem that afternoon Smiley: wink2) and Toyah Wilcox (dunno if she ever made it in the States).

Almost played on a Bowie Track in '81 (his drummer's flight was delayed so I was asked if I'd lay down an overdub if the guy didn't show). Practiced the track and just before recording the drummer showed up, Bowie flicked the xmit button in the mix-room and said 'You can fuck off now'

I laid down a drum track as a cash-in-pocket session for 'Too Shy' by Kajagoogoo but have no idea whether it was mine that was used on the single.

I did play with Macca once (but there were 47 of us on-stage with him at a charity gig in Liverpool in about '77 or '78 so doesn't really count.)

I didn't like the Superman movies. They were dopey. I didn't know Reeves, so don't feel any personal loss. I see no reason now, nor did I before his death, to knock him for the money, awareness, etc that he put forth for his cause. It is of value after all. Selfish Twizted? Bah, no more than anyone else.

He is a great man. I have a signed copy of his book, Still Me, and it is very motivational. I wish I would have had it personalized, but knowing that reading it is actually reading words that he spoke is powerful enough in its own right.
