Wandering the aisles of the local Best Buy today, picking up a copy of the latest Futurama collection, I noticed something: there's a crapload of old television on DVD these days. In fact the TV-DVD collection was threatening to outnumber the actual films on DVD. So I'm eyeballing what they've got and I see all the cult classics you'd expect: V, Dukes of Hazzard, Xena, etc. And I see the Flintstones. First season of the Flintstones for $55 or so. Ok, I admit that the Flintstones was probably quite influential in the world of animation and I know that it was based off the Honeymooners and a lot of the humor is aimed at adults but... man, $55 to watch a handful of episodes you've probably seen 35,000 times seemed a bit steep. Ok, whatever.
Moving on along... ALF. ALF? There's actually people out there thinking "life would be better if I had the first season of ALF at my fingertips"? Are there still cable stations out there showing ALF? Everyone knows who ALF is but if I was to throw out a witty one-liner from the show could any of you actually identify it? Although I suppose ALF did get a made for TV movie and a reunion show. You know who didn't?
Who's The Boss?. WTF? Who in God's holy name actually wants to watch the entire first season of Who's the Boss?? Unless you have some perverse desire to leer at an eleven year old Alyssa Milano, what market could that show possibly have?
So I'm giving it a year and a half before every show from 1978-1999 is on DVD. Small Wonder? On DVD. Manimal? With director's commentary. Jennifer Slept Here? Extras including a segment on Ann Jillian's battle with breast cancer. An entire generation of television archived and on the shelf at Best Buy.
Off topic, they also had a $5 rack of movies and I wanted to buy Glitter just for the giggles of owning it but I couldn't bring myself to actually take it up to the register.
