I find this post to be somewhat interesting on a social level. I am living in Iceland and get a lot of info about how other Europeans, incliding the Icelanders, view Americans. One thing that seems to get these peoples goats is that us Americans usually don't speak any other languages. I know that is common knowledge, but it is ironic that Americans get all hot and bothered when someone else actually can speak English, but just not well. Ever heard of the band Ramstein? In the song "We're all Living in America," there is a quik little quip that goes, "I don't speak my mother's tongue."
I've thought about this point a lot. I felt really small for not being able to speak several languages but then I realized that most Europeans are so close to other countries that speak different languages that it should be fairly easy for them to learn. For us, we are usually surrounded by English speakers, and a few Spanish speakers. Thusly, most of us North Americans can speak a little Spanish. Plus, English is a widely spoken language throughout the world so...
Spanish seems to be quite prevalent too. I guess if you speak English and Spanish, you have a pretty good chance of being understood where ever you go.
guess we're also talking about native English speakers that don't speak English well, but I just thought this was an interesting observation. No need to even bother with my reply--unless that is you feel the need. I'm just venting.
