why the FU[/b]CK is it that everytime I turn it on it's the fu[b]cking "Modern Marvels", or "History of Cranes", or "History of <insert some totally recent and modern invention that dates to less than 60 years ago>"???
and when they do have a show on somthing cool and actaully historical!... it's like a big fekking deal!!? It's the History channel!!

I used to like Modern Marvels and the other contemporary peace-time stuff. Broke up the twenty-three solid hours of WWII European Theatre.

I would like to see more from before WW2. Everytime they do something on the Romans, Celts, or Goths it's like this HUGE special that plays for 2 hours and youre lucky if they have anything else on any time period near enough once a month.

I always assumed half the reason why there's so much WWII programming is because they have a kajillion miles of WWII footage to make cheap programming out of. You can make an hour film on the Battle of So-and-So in 1944 and never leave the studio. Plus WWII is probably a fairly constant draw for them.
Unless you have a guy standing there lecturing about the Visagoths for two hours, making a program about ancient Europe or whatever requires more overhead in actors, locations, costumes, etc. I assume ancient Middle Eastern history is easier with stock footage of pyramids and Mesopotanian temples but it's kind of hard to show the glory of the Celts with stock footage of some English forest.

One of the biggest reasons why they get so much material on WW2 is because the people of that generation are dying off. One day, there will be no more world war 2 veterans. It may not be so much that WW2 is the only thing that ever happened in history so much as that with the advent of modern technology perhaps it can be one of the most well documented moments in history. Time will move on and our grandchildren will be reading about the war on terror (which really began years ago) and be able to study it just as objectively as we can study WW2 and the events that led to it. Such is the way. History is fascinating. How many times do you get to actually hear from people who lived in it?

Discovery Channel had an amazing special on the SpaceShipOne last night. That thing is farkin cool!
UKTVHistory is a great channel, they have like 2 programmes which they repeat for a week, i once injured my ankle and was on crutches and watched the same documentary about auschwitz and then one about the viet-cong many times, at least double figures, by the end of the week i was randomly saying things like "juden aus" and "charlie in the trees!" for a few days, the horror, the horror

I find that it's either shark week or tornado week on discovery channel.
If they can get footage of sharks being lifted out of the water by a tornado then dropped on land that would pretty much cover discovery channels programming for a couple of years.

Just drop the history channel for awhile and then go back at a later time. Should be some older crap on there by then.

I wish Time Warner here would carry History International channel. The little bit I saw of it during a recent sneak preview seemed it showd more of ancient history, since the rest of the world has some.
I am not saying there wasn't any ancient history in the Americans, but outside it all happened in South American and Central America, and we know those don't count when it comes to the history channel.

Then again, we specialize in history. You can drive down the road from here to go to a Klan meeting, they're still fighting the civil war most weekends, and in between, just to prove that we DO have some new stuff, in between the two you can go to the lawnmower races....
