So what is your take on being honest when dumping someone you are dating? Do you tell them why they suck? When I have been dumped I have always been a bit disappointed with the feedback. Hence my email below to some girl I have been dating:

Quote:
In a nutshell, I don’t want to waste your or my time by continuing something that I don’t think is working out quite right. I have struggled to date anyone successfully since I have been in Leeds, and I suppose this is more of the same. Typically and lately, when I have started dating someone, I have been the one who is overly accommodating, who sends too many drink fuelled texts, made the ill-advised drunken phone calls (mobile phones are the devil) and been in need of too many reassurances. Whoever I was dating fairly swiftly, and irreversibly, found me less attractive. I think this is like that, only in reverse. I now see their point.

Obviously Friday night didn’t help matters, and thanks for the apology.

I am sorry it didn’t work out.

It didn't go down well, but I think I was doing the girl a favour, she is 30 and struggling to hold down a boyfriend because she is a bit of a bunny boiler. In a funny sort of way it was quite diplomatic I thought, if a little brutal towards the end. Watcha think?

Sounds to me like the split already happened. He is just trying to explain some things.

Yes, it was established already that we were splitting up, the email was in response to an email she sent me asking "what happened?".

Ahhh, bunny boiler = snakes in the head.

Now that's cleared up, I can address your original post a bit better.

If I think I can get them to dump me instead, I'll do that. It's much easier on them that way.
But if they refuse to take the hint(s) and it progresses to the point I absolutely must be the one who's doing the dumping, I prefer to be as tactless as necessary. Honesty doesn't even really enter the picture. If I'm dumping someone, I don't really want to see them for a while. So I try to make sure it's mutual. I quietly and calmly tell them a few things they really don't want to hear about themselves.

This hasn't always been successful for me. It seems that some women thrive on abuse. Since physical abuse is not on the menu, I have had to tuck tail and run/hide a few times after trying to drive one off. I suppose I could have chucked rocks and yelled, 'Git on outtaheah!' but it's just not my style. I prefer non-confrontation as much as possible.

Only rules I have are be honest, and no farewell nookie! I don't want it drawn out either, so I want to get it all out in the open in one fell swoop. It may not be kind, but it is for me the best way, I tend to try way to long before giving up.

Heheh, funny thread. And had you been breaking up with me, Pat, I'da bought you a beer for making what normally is an awkward situation better by injecting some humor into an otherwise tedious task of ending a relationship that both know, deep down, was fatally flawed anyhow.

Solid feedback from a jilted SO is tough to get since they normally take that opportunity to vent on you. She should consider herself lucky. Of course, when we read about a young man slain in a gruesome fashion by a neurotic ex-girlfriend, whose body was subsequently found in a large pot boiling merrily away on the stove, we'll know what really happened...
