Here's the run-down

i'm a student

I'm in earth science

Teacher is talking about hurricanes in florida and global warming

According to science, florida is very likely to get hit this bad ANNUALLY

ok, 4 hurricanes this year, and it's the beginning,

this year ain't up yet....

and it may worsen

my question is how long d'ya think it'll be till florida either turns into a modern-day atlantis, or just is ripped off os the coast of the US

well, torn off or just batter up so bad that mapmakers tear off the state of florida from the map.......yeah it makes no sense, so just go with a moder-day atlantis

Florida has been through this kind of stuff before. Recorded history of weather is a pretty damn new thing.

What this MIGHT DO, is wash the trailer parks out of florida and tell people to eitherh ave a well built house or don't go there. I wouldn't invest in NASCAR collectibles stores in Florida anytime soon.

One of the hurricanes will pull Florida from the USA, and glue it to Cuba.

If Florida ever does go down under, we can sell it back to Spain and then after Castro dies, make Cuba into the 50th state. We need the money for our huge national debt anyways(thanks to Bush).

So this is what our illustrious high schools are teaching? No wondering why public education is in the *******...

Thats just Bush playing with his weather machine, to make sure Florida is onside with the plan. Doubt the rigged election thing will work this time, so intimidation is the next best thing.

Brought to you buy the government that brought us "The War on Drugs" and "The War on Terrorism", now it's time for Bush to announce "The War on Hurricanes".

Yay!

Hopefully your Earth Science class teaches that Florida (along with the rest of the US) isn't floating in the ocean, it's an actual landmass extending down to the crust. While it might eventually fold under the water by the same actions that causes mountains, it can't get "ripped off" by a hurricane.

Although I take any of these "my teacher said" posts with a grain of salt. I still laugh to remember Trunks posting that he was half asleep in class and "thought he heard his teacher say" we're a kajillion dollars in debt. We had all the board pubbies using that stirring testimony as proof that the American education system was flawed and, best of all, Gbaji offering to go physically assault the teacher for saying such things. Smiley: laugh

Damn, there goes my winter vacation. I was gonna go scuba diving under Florida.

As has been said many times:

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

Any one else here remember that these hurricanes have killed almost 2000 people? Small detail there, I know.

What does loss of human life have to do with Florida falling into the ocean? The hurricanes could wipes the state clean of all life and leave it a sheet of rock and it would still be firmly attached to the rest of the North American continent and above sea level.

No one is belittling the deaths but they're no more relevant to the original question than the WTC deaths were.

In my mind, I hear the sound of a sheet of paper, being slowly torn.

Doh! There goes Florida!

Perhaps the OP (or his/her teacher) should look at some graphic depictions of cross sections of the earth.
Here's a site I found with nifty little animations and everything that talks about plate tectonics. I don't see them mentioning anything about areas simply tearing off.

As to how long before Florida is made uninhabitable... I don't think the residents will be moving out any time soon.

I don't know... it seems damn near uninhabitable now, even without hurricanes; nothing but a hot, humid, bug-infested ****-hole. But that's just my opinion.

A few more years of global warming and most of Florida will be under two feet of water anyways. Eventually will turn into a giant sand bar. It's a rather promising thought.
