Other than having two pictures right on the damn front page of that site, Trump is ranked number 58, weighing in at 2.6 billion.

He's also run a dozen or so comapnies into the ground, declared bankruptcy four times and still gets hero status in America.

What a country.

I like trump's wealth tax idea (one time, 17% tax on wealth for the upper 1% or something).

It would eliminate most of the national debt and possibly allow for meaningful tax cuts for all income ranges.

Actually, I was thinking that not having to pay interest on the debt would free up some money to pay for universal health care, but I didn't want this to turn into a 150 post thread about something we've probably already argued to death.

A one time only 17% tax on the top 1% of country would only net around 170 billion dollars which wouldnt be to huge of a chunk taken off the 7.4 trillion national debt.

Plus once you passed bill and tried collecting all the money and such you wouldnt see all of the 170 billion.

Are you under the impression that the total net worth of the top one percent of americans is 1.7 trillion?

Considering that the 1% mark is roughly 2 million, and that the 400 richest people have at minimum 750 million, totaling over a trillion among them, I would say that the upper 1%'s wealth is well over 1 trillion dollars. Maybe I'll look it up tomorrow.

The info I had on the wealth tax was pre-bush, so I'm not sure if his tax cuts for the wealthy would give them enough wealth to make up for the increased debt incurred by his tax cuts for a 17% tax to cover it.

top 1% is over 1 Trillion for sure but unless the top 1% has 41,176,470,588,235 dollars between them then your 17% one time deal will not get rid of the debt.

Once again my math might be wrong i went:

17% over 100% = 7 trillion over X

so 7 Trillion * 100 / 17 = X

700 Trillion / 17 = X

41.176 Trillion = X

and just to check 7 / 41.176= .17 or 17%

So im just saying that the 17% one time tax wouldnt solve the problem. Since im pretty sure the top 1 % are not worth that much.

I can see how my numbers might be off, considering we are raising the national debt by 1.69 billion dollars per day under the bush administration.

I just wince because Canada has about 510 billion dollars in debt and we pay about 40 billion a year just on Interest.

Of course our debt has gone down about 50-60 billion in the last couple years. Dont even want to think how much interest there is on 7.3 trillion debt.

I will agree that Bush was bad for the economy. Tax cuts for the rich and trickle down economics blech. Then i always cite the estate tax and Bush which is a clear case of the President lying.

Also Bush on spending for example the Senior Medicaid plan which despite the fact the government is buying prescription drugs en masse they have to pay uber high prices. Now Wal Mart on the other hand gets a deal because its such a big chain. That dont sound right, does it?

Anyways when it comes to the economy you have to be realistic, there is no miracle cure that will solve the problem over night. You also cant expect the wealthy top 10% to foot all the bill. The happy medium of decent taxes without slashing all social programs is a hard one.

Yes how foolish to expect those who have benefitted the most from the policies of the nation to contribute to it.

Dont get me wrong im all for rich people paying out the wang since i aint rich but just not 90% of taxes like some people think they should.

Edit- Im no economics major and im not going to get my MBA this aint my field and i havent directed a lot of thought to it or how to solve the problem.

I can barely run Sim City, i wouldnt force my economic views on anyone. I just think its kind of a bunk deal for the government to come in and be like "hey you make over "X" amount and therefore you will be taxed more than the average citizen in order to help pay for our spending." Especially when the same government isnt watching its spending.

But then again i think if the government did something simple like say everyone pays 10% tax and thats that. Well if you are making 10,000$ and have to pay 1,000 its going to affect you more than say someone making 100,000 who is paying 10,000 but still making 90k.

I do know that a tax cut was needed to boost/stimulate the economy but that by giving a majority of it to the wealthy and expecting trickle down to run its course is foolish and i also know that saying you are abolishing a tax to help the poor when the tax only affects the rich is wrong.

So im going to have to say that Im only 23 and still trying to see where i stand on the issue.

The problem with a tax cut for the rich or for a flat income tax/non-progressive income tax is that once a person's needs are attended to, all other income is excess and therefore, wasted.

I'm not monetarily motivated. I never have been. I've tried, but just can't make myself get all that interested in money. I like the things that it can buy (big boats, HQ booze and nice hookers) but not enough to center my life around it. My creature needs are exceedingly easy to meet, so I'll always be middling to low end income. Sad, but true.

The majority of my income is pissed away. After the amount I'm squirreling away into 401k, I keep enough to make sure I'm clothed, fed, and housed. Hookers and liquor stores get the rest.

Rich people, on the other hand, while obtaining better hookers and booze, simply can't contribute back to society on the smae scale that I do. There are only so many hours in the day, and unless they pay for booze and hookers for some soup kitchens, they'll never put all of their income back into society.

Since none of the soup kitchens I've eaten at lately have free booze or hookers, I say the rich should definitely be taxed harder. Tax them to their knees, or until they start pitching in for my hookers and booze.
